Description

In the beginning, I asked, “How can I paint in a way that represents light?” Years later, I asked, “How can I paint with light itself?”

Over time, I realized we do not ‘see’ a painting, but rather nothing more than wavelengths of light reflected from the canvas. But, that ‘nothing more’, a neuro-optical event at the back of the eye, is everything. For there, in the instant when immaterial photons strike the optic nerve, is the beginning of memory. So, the primacy of image gave way to its essential medium – not paint or canvas – but light itself, and the experience of light.

These ‘light boxes’ are the improbable and inadequate – yet to me, surprising – solution to my questions. Through them, I learned to ‘paint’ by combining wavelengths, instead of pigment, to make colors that have no name – because, unlike paint, they are neither stable, nor have an ‘edge’. This new, translucent color was made of continuous evolutions of hue resolving into one another so imperceptibly that their margins were indistinguishable.

And the color-structure changes as you move – making precisely what you ‘see’ extremely difficult to remember. Thus, memory, came into play, and posed a new question: Which has preference: the primal and momentary nature of perception, as something that is ‘real’, or the lingering, dream-like nature of memory that is not?

It may be that the resulting work denies the intellectual, the cool and rational character of perception, and all of its categorizing impetus, in favor of that warm realm – the emotional, the irrational quality of experience, and the storehouse of experience – the dreamy world of memory, the essence of existence with which we are only ever partially acquainted.

WTF RU SHOWING!?! Hanging Party

Type:
Network:
Global
Date:
Wednesday, December 30, 2009
Time:
3:00pm – 9:00pm
Location:
The Feburary Collective

Description

WTF RU HANGING!?!

For my last hurrah as curator at The February Collective, I’ll be doing a non-juried group show. Anything goes – painting, drawing, photography, sculpture – surreal, dada, conceptual, aesthetic, classical, modenrnist – WhateverTF! However I’d like to encourage off the wall and strange “sculpture”.
Non-”artists” are also welcomed and encouraged to put their own WTF’s on the walls as well.

WTF RU HANGING rules/details:

One space per person!
You can do whatever you like in the space and put multiple WTF’s in it, but you only get one space

WTFs must be kept within the 12×12″ space!
The walls will be divided into 12×12″ squares over the entire gallery. The WTF may extend out from the wall as much as you’d like, provided it still does not go outside the 12×12″ area defined on the wall.
There will be no “border” space between the squares, so be aware of that.

First come first serve!
Hanging your WTF must be done on Wednesday. No spots will be held for anyone. If you show up late don’t complain about the lack of choices or space.

You are responsible for hanging your own WTF!
I will provide nails, a few hammers, a power drill (with screwdriver bits), and some pins to hang WTFs. If you need any additional hardware (screws, a shelf, staples, tape, gum, a noose, etc) to hang your WTF, you must bring it yourself.

Have fun!
I want this be a chance for you to do something different, get out of your comfort zone, and most importantly to have fun and enjoy the act of art!

The WTF RU SHOWING!?! Hanging Party will be from 3-9pm on Wednesday, December 30th.
We’ll have refreshments, some food and music during the hanging to make sure it’s fun for everyone.

WTF RU SHOWING!?! at the February Collective will be open for First Thursday December 31st and First Friday January 1st.

The February Collective is located upstairs in Building B in the Blue Star Arts Complex, up the staircase that is located between the Jump Start Theater and Stone Metal Press.

WTF! RU ready!?

Here’s the deal: I’m filling the gallery with 12×12″ prints I made donning the characters of W, T, and F.

When you arrive with your work, you’ll pull one of these down and in it’s place you will hang your work. You are welcome to keep this print as a souvenir of the event.
Also I will have a form for you to fill out, so be prepared to give me the title, medium, date, and price of the work so I can keep track of everything and create a list for the show.

I have also been aware that the First Friday in January is on New Years Day, and I’ve heard rumors that some galleries won’t be open this weekend, but instead will be the weekend of the 7th. In this case, I will be open this Thursday/Friday as well as next Thursday/Friday, provided there are still people out. If anyone has any word on the ‘official’ information regarding this, I would greatly appreciate hearing it.

I look forward to seeing WTF you guys come up with!
