The 3rd Annual On & Off Fredericksburg Road Studio Tour takes place in San Antonio’s famed Deco District, along a section of the celebrated Old Spanish Trail Auto Highway. The event, scheduled for Feb. 20 and 21, 2010, features two full days of leisurely self-guided tours that offer visitors the rare opportunity to interact with area artists in their work spaces. From reclaimed former neighborhood grocery stores to intimate backyard sanctuaries, the studios on the tour provide the environments in which artists create a variety of works, such as large ceramic sculptures, metalworks, one-of-a-kind light fixtures, art photography, and a variety of paintings in various styles. Demonstrations, hospitality, and opportunities to purchase art are all part of the On and Off Fred experience. The Mission of the On and Off Fredericksburg Rd. Studio Tour is to promote the work of diverse visual and cultural artists in the area, enhance the appreciation for the arts in the community, and stimulate neighborhood revitalization.
The tour weekend kicks off Friday evening, February 19, 6:00-9:00 pm, with the not-to-be-missed On & Off Fred Autograph Party and Reception at Bihl Haus Arts, 2803 Fredericksburg Rd. On exhibit will be works by each of the studio tour participating artists who will be on hand to autograph copies of the tour catalog. Lavish hors d’oeuvres, wine, live jazz by George Prado and George González, and the opportunity to mingle with artists, event sponsors, and community leaders fill the evening.
Visiting the tour website— www.onandofffred.org —provides the visitor with complete tour information, a downloadable map (available Feb. 12), and images of each artist’s work. On the tour, visitors are guided by a color-coded map that makes navigating the tour easy. Seven neighborhoods are featured on the tour this year: historic Monticello Park, stately Jefferson, Woodlawn Lake, Los Angeles Heights, eclectic Keystone, charming Beacon Hill, and delightful Alta Vista. A full-color, 80-page studio tour catalog ($10) may be ordered off the website starting February 1st, or may be picked up at local participating businesses, including Vee’s Hair and Spa (1022 Donaldson), IAMA Coffee House (just off Fredericksburg Road @ 131 Babcock), and Chris Madrid’s (1900 Blanco Road). A free map will be available at the San Antonio Visitor’s Bureau. A complimentary copy of the catalog is available to members of the press by email request to
The On and Off Fredericksburg Road Studio Tour is made possible with the support of the City of San Antonio Office of Cultural Affairs and City Council District 7. The tour is organized by area artists and Bihl Haus Arts (www.bihlhausarts.org), which is located at Primrose at Monticello Park Apartments, the only non-profit professional art gallery on the premises of senior affordable housing in the U.S. The gallery is also supported by The Potashnik Family Foundation and Primrose. “In film after film, Smith explores the cracks within and the tribulations of the world he confronts everyday, taking a closer look at and often transforming (verbally, associatively, just by observing from a different angle) things like a pane of glass, the discolorations of a moldy ceiling, a hospital water-tower, the archaeology of an ancient toilet, an old shepherd’s proverb, or a work he was unhappy with some 20 odd years before. In the process, he makes us look more closely, not just at his films and the cinema generally, but our own surroundings, the everyday world that engulfs us but that we probably routinely dismiss as a suitable subject for contemplation, art and imagination.”
— On the Street where You Live: The Films of John Smith by Adrian Danks, Senses of Cinema, 2003
“John Smith has always been an awkward case in British experimental film, not least because he has been that peculiar beast – a humorist. But like his forebears the Marx Brothers and Buster Keaton, Smith’s humor is grounded in a profound understanding and playful subversion of the film medium itself. One of the most talented filmmakers of the postwar generation, he has attracted admirers from way beyond the narrow confines of the Avant Garde. His reputation rests on a quite unique sensibility which has successfully married three traits – humor, documentary and formal ingenuity — into an indissoluble whole.”
— Michael O’Pray, Art Monthly, 2002

The best show Blue Star has mounted since Lonely Are the Brave is closing this Saturday, and it’s well worth checking out on your way to Second Saturday down the street on S Flores. Familiar Unknown: Contemporary Ceramics takes advantage of Blue Star’s large main exhibition spaces to highlight four women working at the forefront of clay art. It’s another example of ceramics becoming an increasingly visible medium in the San Antonio contemporary gallery scene, something I hope to cover more soon. Curated by Ovidio Giberga, an accomplished ceramic artist in his own right, and director of UTSA’s ceramics program, the show is full of strong work, installed impeccably.
Anne Drew Potter’s disfigured characters laugh and scowl devilishly in installations that are both spare and overflowing with heavily wrought emotion. Three bulbous women direct their menacing gazes at a frail, limp rabbit doll in “The Judgment of Br’er Rabbit.” A large yellow baby glazed in dense, bright yellow (which I’m told is a reference to Chinese glazes) delights in the misfortune of a large cloth baby who has tumped over. Across the gallery, another pair vaguely mirror these poses: a young, naked girl ecstatic lifts her arms above her as she stands over a young, naked boy fallen back on his elbows, gazing up.
In the middle of the triangle formed by Potter’s works, an installation by Rebbeca Hutchinson strikes a counterpoint of humble, organic engineering. Apparently built from materials collected on-site, Hutchinson’s spindly sticks with nest-like forms built of paper and clay are scattered sparsely through the space. I feel like I could do a better job describing them if I only knew Japanese, but there’s definitely a healthy dose of wabi in this installation. From the literature, it sounds as if these pieces are destroyed after the exhibit, so I’ll say it again: see this show before it disappears.
The last installation in the main gallery draws another contrast, with Susan Beiner’s baroque composition of imaginary flowers and and man-made detritus (both exquisitely rendered in porcelain), the only piece that actually hangs on the wall. At first this assemblage appears to consist entirely of flowers and other organic forms, but a close look reveals bolts, pieces of furniture or anonymous industrial objects strewn throughout. Nearby, the flowers growing from the gallery floor make porcelain, foam, and polyfil seem like a most natural combination of materials.
Finally, in an adjacent space Blue Star calls the middle gallery, Rebekah Bogard has installed a fantasy world that takes some cues from CGI children’s movies, but sexualizes the characters just a touch. Bright colors and incredibly smooth glazes produce an exhibit that hardly seems ceramic at all. In the artist’s statement, and some other reviews of her work, references to a darkness lurking beneath the candy surface are ubiquitous, but as much as I tried I can’t see it in this installation. It seems very sweet and fluffy to me. Either the artist has moved away from the dark side to some degree, or I’m being naive; judge for yourself.

CRONYISM. Statement*
Hey there. Um. I’m Jeremiah, the curator of “Cronyism.” It’s…well it’s kind of hot in here…does it feel warm to you? Jody…Jod…could you, yeah, could you turn down the, turn up the air conditioner a little. Thank you.
So, as I was saying, I’m Jeremiah. You can call me Mr. Teutsch if you feel like it, or Jerry is very popular these days. Anyways I curated the show “Cronyism” which is up at the FL!GHT Gallery and opening on the Second Saturday of February, which is the 13th. Yes. From 7 to 10. Be there!
And basically what I’m doing with this exhibit is letting San Antonio see what my friends from Denver are doing, since everybody has seen all the artists already that I would have picked from here. So I pulled together four of my old college buddies, said “Hey buddies, I want to bring some new talent to San Antonio, and you guys are the top of my list of favorite artists. in. the. world. Any of you fellows want a show?”
And they were all like, “sure.”
So here it is, a beautiful show of a group of some of my friends from Denver. New work from four people you’ve never heard of, but upon seeing the show, you probably won’t forget. (Because it’s awesome.) Hand-plucked.
And why not show off my friends? It’s what every curator does. Come on; don’t deny it! See…but they don’t tell you that they’re showing off their buddies. At least I’m being truthful. You have, for once, nothing but honesty from a curator. Feels nice doesn’t it?
This is a win-win situation! They get a great show in a progressive gallery; I get accolades and public attention. And, times being what they are, I don’t even have to bullshit around with talk about “meta-this” and “post-that”, and “pre-whatsits” and feelings and intentions and blah blah blah. (Though there are all of those things in this show. These guys – Harry C. Walter, Justin Beard, Travis Egedy, and Zane Carroll – they’re not dumb-dumbs. They all have degrees from the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design – that’s a fine school!)
God… I heard this numb milquetoast of a man talking about his vision for the show he was curating the other day, on and on about the passion, and the merit, and the play of light…give me a break. Go feed a goat at a petting zoo, you maudlin putz.
It’s still too warm in here…I…yes, yes…yes, no ice is fine. No-no-no-no. In the drink. In the tea. No. Yes. Thank you Jody…will you delete that bit about the…
From the hurt little office of
Jeremiah C. Teutsch

OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, February 13, 6 – 8:30 pm
RECEPTION: Thursday, March 18, 6 – 8 pm (performance by a group from the SA Symphony at 7 pm).
EXHIBIT RUNS THROUGH SATURDAY, MARCH 20.
The title of the exhibit is derived from the artists’ thoughtful explorations and perceptive expressions of social, political, and cultural issues; sexuality; nature; fantasy, and everyday reality. Through a variety of mediums—including drawing, painting, and sculpture—the artists address the past and present, as well as potentialities for a better future.
Judith Cottrell, Sara Frantz, Jayne Lawrence, and Vincent Valdez are the four newest artists represented in the gallery. They all create relevant, insightful, and stunning art that, while conceived through a diverse set of realities, is greatly complementary. Their work conveys thought-provoking messages, based on experience, imagination, and hope, that are at times serious, often humorous, and always intriguing.
