Description
Artist Talk by Sally Weber
Austin-based holographer Sally Weber will give a talk on her work and the holographic process as part of her current exhibition, Tertium Quid (The Third Thing), at The Project Space at Blue Star Contemporary Art Center. The talk is free and open to the public, with a reception to follow.
Sally Weber is an innovator in the field of holography. A graduate of the Center for Advanced Visual Studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), her early abstract work in holography set a precedent for solar installations integrated into architecture. She has produced numerous site-specific installations, public art works and exhibitions both in the United States, Europe and Asia. Her work is included in private and museum collections including the Butler Institute of American Art, David Bermant Foundation, Karl Ernst Osthaus Museum and the San Jose Museum.
The talk will take place at 7 p.m. on the evening of Thursday, February 4th, 2010 at Blue Star Contemporary Art Center.

Eighth grade Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) students and their instructor, Esperanza Garaza, worked with artist Ricky Amendariz to create Project Calle Rojo, a performance based artwork that utilizes a temescalli, or sweat lodge, to explore native cultures, rites of passge, and self-expression.
This educational partnership between Artpace, Ricky Armendariz, and Washington Irving Academt is supported by an anonymous donor and the Kronkosky Charitable Foundation. Special thanks to the Parman Party.

New York Times Foreign Affairs Columnist Thomas Friedman to Speak at Trinity University
SAN ANTONIO – Thomas Friedman, award-winning journalist, will speak at Trinity University at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday Feb. 16, 2010, in Laurie Auditorium. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Mr. Friedman, foreign affairs columnist for The New York Times and winner of three Pulitzer Prizes, has been called “the country’s best newspaper columnist” by Vanity Fair.
His latest book, Hot, Flat and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution – and How It Can Renew America, was No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list. His previous books include The World is Flat, Longitudes and Attitudes: The World in the Age of Terrorism, The Lexus and The Olive Tree, and From Beirut to Jerusalem, which won the National Book Award.
Mr. Friedman appears in his own segment, “Tom’s Journal,” on The Newshour with Jim Lehrer and is a frequent guest on programs such as Face the Nation and Charlie Rose. His TV documentaries, Searching for the Roots of 9/11, The Other Side of Outsourcing, and Addicted to Oil, have aired on the Discovery Channel.

Pulitzer Prize Recipient to Present DeCoursey Lecture at Trinity University

SAN ANTONIO – Jared Diamond, professor of geography at UCLA, will present the Trinity University DeCoursey Lecture for the 2009-2010 academic year at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1, in Laurie Auditorium. The title of his talk is “Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed.” His presentation is free and open to the public.
The ruined cities, temples, and statues of history’s great, vanished societies (Easter Island, the Anasazi, the Lowland Maya, Angkor Wat, Great Zimbabwe, and many more) are the birthplace of endless romantic mysteries. But these disappearances offer more than idle conjecture: the social collapses were due in part to the types of environmental problems that beset us today.
Yet many societies facing similar problems do not collapse. What makes certain societies especially vulnerable? Why didn’t their leaders perceive and solve their environmental problems? What can we learn from their fates, and what can we do differently today to help us avoid their fates?
Professor Diamond earned his A.B. from Harvard College and doctorate in physiology and membrane biophysics from the University of Cambridge. He began his scientific career as professor of physiology at UCLA Medical School and later expanded into evolutionary biology and geography and became professor of geography at UCLA, his current position. He has been elected to the National Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society. Among Professor Diamond’s many awards are the National Medal of Science, the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement, Japan’s Cosmos Prize, a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, and the Lewis Thomas Prize honoring the Scientist as Poet, presented by the Rockefeller University. He has published more than 200 articles in Discover, Natural History, Nature, and Geo magazines. His book Guns, Germs, and Steel, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize.
Doors to Laurie Auditorium will open at 6:45 p.m. on the evening of the lecture. The lecture series is made possible by a gift from the late Gen. Elbert DeCoursey and Mrs. DeCoursey of San Antonio.

Academy Award Winner Dustin Lance Black to speak at Trinity University as Part of Stieren Arts Enrichment Series
SAN ANTONIO – A screenwriter, a percussion quartet, and an art historian are among the distinguished array of outstanding leaders and talents in the fields of drama, art, and music coming to Trinity University as part of the spring Stieren Arts Enrichment Series. All events are free and open to the public.
Dustin Lance Black
Dustin Lance Black will speak during “An Evening with Academy Award Winner Dustin Lance Black” at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8, in Laurie Auditorium. He transitioned quickly from art director for commercials into directing and writing, winning the 2008 Academy Award® and Writers Guild of America Award for Best Original Screenplay for Milk. As writer and co-producer of the HBO series “Big Love,” Mr. Black drew on his Mormon childhood experiences in San Antonio. He will re-team with Milk director Gus Van Sant for Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, an adaptation of the Tom Wolfe novel. Mr. Black is an honors graduate of UCLA’s School of Film and Television.
Painter Jim Torok will present “I Am Not Schizophrenic” at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 4, in the Stieren Theater. After completing his BFA from Indiana University in 1979, he moved to New York City, where he received his MFA from Brooklyn College in 1981. In recent years, Mr. Torok has created two very different bodies of work linked by an interest in the observation of people. His first solo exhibition was in 1996 and in 1999, he began exhibiting his portraits and cartoons together at numerous exhibitions throughout the U.S. and Europe, including exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Portrait Gallery.
Percussion quartet So Percussion will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 6, in the Stieren Theater at 7:30 p.m. Since coming together at the Yale School of Music, they have been creating music that is at turns raucous and touching. Praised by Billboard magazine and The New York Times, the Brooklyn-based group has performed all over the United States with concerts at the Lincoln Center Festival, Carnegie Hall, and other venues. Their concert at Trinity will feature a range of selections from percussion classics to original music.
Film aesthetician George Wilson will present “Love and Bullshit in Santa Rosa: On the Coen Brothers’ The Man Who Wasn’t There” at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, in the Stieren Theater. He is a professor of philosophy and cinematic arts at the University of Southern California. His main research interests are film aesthetics, theory of action, Wittgenstein, and philosophy of language.
Art historian Katy Siegel will present “First Man | Last Man: Apocalypse in Contemporary American Art” at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 11, in Chapman Auditorium. She is associate professor at Hunter College, CUNY, editor-in-chief of Art Journal, and a contributing editor at Artforum. She is a co-author of Art Works: Money (2004) and author of “Since ’45”: The American Condition and Contemporary Art (2010). She has written extensively on contemporary art, including the work of artists Richard Tuttle, Jeff Koons, and Takashi Murakami, and subjects such as “the collector,” “youth,” and “the public.”

Description
‘The Last Sopa of Christ’ will bring to life the print/painting by AVI. Patrons attending this art show will have the opportunity to be involved in an avauntguard art performance. Elements of the show will include a grand entrance of AVI, Jesus and the disciples¸ attention from paparazzi on the red carpet, and a constant real life enactment of the painting until departure. Patrons are encouraged to participate in the valet services that will be offered, as it will add to the dynamic of the show. This will be the first of several performance art shows by AVI.
AVI’s Mission :
To establish an ongoing unity and collaboration between the San Antonio Art, Theater, Cultural and Business communities in order to highlight the everyday people that make San Antonio the place to be. To create more openness and awareness of the arts, and encourage creativity and innovation in each field, for it is creativity and innovation that has made America.
And also to counter the abundant negative portrayal of Christ that modern art has created.
This is art for Christ’s sake! I want everyone to have fun and enjoy art again, even if Jesus Christ has to show up himself to make it happen!

Description
Explore the rich traditions of the Mexican rodeo at the Museo Alameda with the new exhibition “Arte en la Charreria: The Artisanship of the Mexican Equestrian Culture.” On display from January 27th through May 2nd the exhibition brings to life the history of horse riding and roping with vivid watercolors, and beautifully crafted costumes, saddles, and spurs. This bilingual exhibition is designed to coincide with Mexico’s 200th anniversary of independence and 100th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution.
Arte en la Charrería: The Artisanship of Mexican Equestrian Culture contains more than 300 examples of craftsmanship and design distinctive to the Mexican Cowboy. Timed to coincide with the bicentennial of Mexico’s independence from Spain and the 100th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution, the exhibition features leather work, costumes, textiles, silver and iron work, as well as works on paper which illustrate the life of the charro. More than simple vestiges of a nation’s folk tradition, these objects are reminders of a rich heritage that continues to this day. The collection belonging to Marisú González Germán has been curated by noted Mexican scholar Santiago Espinosa de los Monteros.
Arte en la Charrería: The Artisanship of Mexican Equestrian Culture was organized by International Arts & Artists, Washington, DC in collaboration with Luis González, Marisú González and Gabriel Cabello.
