Transformation & Runway Exhibition FUN-draiser for P.E.A.C.E. Initiative

Date:
Sunday, November 1, 2009
Time:
3:00pm – 7:00pm
Location:
Gallista Gallery, 1913 S. Flores, San Anto, TX 210- 212-8606

Description

This year our Fashion Show FUN-draiser will be held in conjunction with Day of the Dead – Dia De Los Muertos festivities. As a service learning project that we are doing with OLLUSA students and Professor Deborah Kuetzpalin Vasquez we decided to change the format. The title of the event is:

“Chale con el Pleito – Stop the Fighting
Arriba con Las Cholas” – Long-Live the Cholas!

In our never ending search to find new, innovative, unique ways of disseminating our message of non-violence this fashion show will go off with a different twist. First, we are using the venue of the Gallista Art Gallery www.gallista.org, 1913 S. Flores, SATx, 78205. Surrounded by art we’ll be reclaiming culture as a strength, as a form of grounding that instills pride, power of identity and positive self-worth. We are setting up a transformation studio, runway and ambiance to profile the power of reclaiming the “Chola” concept. There we will lift up the Chola as a powerful figura of our cultura. The chola will be about her self selected “look”. She will shed the image of violent gang fighter, territorial abuser, irresponsible gang member that in reality is very afraid at her core and be transformed into a strong, confidant, empowered activist, change agent, cultura promoter and creator, community builder, people power organizer and peace maker who cannot and will not be a victim or victimizer.
Anchored in our common childhood histories of making do with what you have, local artists will bring to life the experience of playing with paper dolls. They will create outfits of art for each of our Chola models that will then be auctioned off.

  • Mel Bochner is showing recent work at Lawrence Markey gallery on Friday night, 5-7 pm.
  • For those of you who dig theory, the Land Heritage Institute is hosting an art-sci symposium, “The Nature of Place,” full of important thinkers, from Lucy Lippard, Sandy Stone, and Joan Jonas to Anjali Gupta (editor / director of Art Lies) and Leslie Raymond (head of the New Media Program at UTSA and one half of Potter-Belmar Labs). This is on Saturday & Sunday. It’s free, but you have to register.
  • For some more family-oriented fun on Saturday, check out the Blue Star Contemporary Art Center’s Family Day, with free workshops, demonstrations, food, drink, and live music. There’s even a bike rodeo and free silk screening if you bring your bike & t-shirts!
  • Saturday night the Martinez Street Women’s Center is having a fundraiser at Artpace called the Bling-Bling Fling. Should be a blast. Tickets are $25.
  • The street art festival Clogged Caps is going on all day Saturday, with top-notch aerosol artists & DJs.

Description

Lawyers. Accountants. Computer programmers. That’s what our parents encouraged us to become when we grew up. But Mom and Dad were wrong. The future belongs to a very different kind of person with a very different kind of mind. The era of “left brain” dominance, and the Information Age that it engendered, are giving way to a new world in which “right brain” qualities-inventiveness, empathy, meaning-predominate. That’s the argument at the center of this provocative and original book, which uses the two sides of our brains as a metaphor for understanding the contours of our times.

In this insightful and entertaining book, which has been translated into 20 languages, Daniel H. Pink offers a fresh look at what it takes to excel. A Whole New Mind reveals the six essential aptitudes on which professional success and personal fulfillment now depend, and includes a series of hands-on exercises culled from experts around the world to help readers sharpen the necessary abilities. This book will change not only how we see the world but how we experience it as well.
