Mysteries of San Antonio Street Art : Bikes?

Posted by justin on 31 May 2009 | Tagged as: acquisitions, adventure day, announcements, art + bikes, art paparazzi, borders, opportunities, possibilities

*update (june 08, 09) I ran into Daniel again and he is now claiming that the bikes will be temporarily displayed throughout the city, and locked in place.  He will be showing them soon as an entire group.

Be on the lookout, local artist Daniel Saldana, known most prominently in our community for his unfathomably plated metal objects, has taken to turning his excess metal into art bicycles, and leaving them about town.  I’ve seen them left up at SAMA, and Blue Star now, both times without a camera on my person.  I caught him at Red Dot with his newest creation, this time, chained to the pole outside.  Previous bikes were left to be picked up by lucky takers, and ostensibly this new one, I was told was “not finished,” and would be given a similar fate after completion.  If you have other images of these art bikes in their native habitat, give em up, via our contact form.

Unveil of the Wall

Posted by thomas-cummins on 28 May 2009 | Tagged as: upcoming events

Sat, May 30
12:00 pm to 9:00 pm

This is kinda bizarre but I’m posting it because it kinda deals with art and censorship but you can also get a glance of David Shelton’s new gallery next door. This restaurant owner seems to be hiding behind the veil of art with the benefit of having an art gallery in his building. Plus there are Mimosas.

What you don’t know about your HOA could cost you

08:01 PM CDT on Friday, May 22, 2009

Christopher Heath

A local business owner, hoping to showcase a piece of art, is instead showcasing a classic fight between property owners and property associations.

STONE OAK – Damien Watel sees nothing wrong with the 18 foot silver fork outside his business off Stone Oak Parkway, but then again he paid more than $20,000 to have it built.

Watel calls the oddly shaped sculpture “art”, while the Stone Oak Homeowners Association calls it an “eyesore” and is demoing he either take it down or cover it up.

With the threat of a fine and possible litigation, Watel who owns the Ciel and Caio2 restaurants, is erecting a massive cinderblock wall to hide the statue from view, a compromise reached between him and the HOA.

At the heart of the issue is the failure by Mr. Watel to file an application with the HOA for the construction of the sculpture. Watel says since the large fork is art, he didn’t think he need permission from the HOA to build it, however, the HOA says the fork is an advertisement for his business and therefore needed to be approved by the HOA ahead of time.

Watel did eventually file an application with the HOA which was rejected. He also appealed; an appeal that was also rejected. Watel says he will have other artists come in and paint the wall to make it match the other buildings in the area all while hoping the HOA will change its mind and allow the wall to come down.

Local real estate attorneys say many property owners fall into the same situation as Mr. Watel, not finding out until it’s too late that they have violated the local homeowners association rules by building something that is not approved under the association’s rules.

State laws give broad powers to homeowners associations to regulate within their own area. In addition, homeowners associations can add too local ordinances or state laws, provided they do not supersede them.

Damien Watel says it will cost him hundreds of dollars to obscure the fork from the road so that his business can remain in compliance with the local association.

Come “paint the town red” with local artists who are protesting the wall around Gilbert Duran’s sculpture: “Fork”. They will have a chance to pain the existing wall themselves. Damien will be serving Mimosas, wines, tea, water and some other goodies – and the kitchen will be open Saturday for lunch for this ocasion only. Hope to see you all there!

Description

Hello there,

Plaza Ciel would like to invite you to attend the unveiling of the wall that will cover the infamous Fork sculpture by Gilbert Duran at Ciel and Ciao2 on Stone Oak – No need to RSVP and please invite your friends! The wall has been ordered to be built as a compromise between Mr. Watel and the Stone Oak Homeowner Association – they claim it is advertisement, Mr. Watel claims it’s art – so between tearing it down and building a wall, Mr. Watel agreed to the wall. Even though Plaza Ciel compromised, you don’t have to! Come join in the discussion on May 30th!

On Kawara is not On Twitter

Posted by ben on 27 May 2009 | Tagged as: conceptual art, net.art

I noticed today (via AFC) that there’s an On Kawara Twitter account which announces “I AM STILL ALIVE #art” every day. Then I noticed that the announcement is made every day at 11:55 AM, and that it is posted via a Perl script (Perl Net::Twitter). As it happens, last night I was flipping through , and I came across On Kawara’s postcard project, in which he sent the time he woke up each day stamped on postcards (this went on for 4 months):

Nov – 1 1969 I got up at 4.28 P.M.
Nov – 2 1969 I got up at 3.13 P.M.
Nov – 3 1969 I got up at 1.15 P.M.

Given the personal nature of this work, I figured either this isn’t On Kawara’s Twitter account or he is seriously changing up his working methods. A Google search later, I find the confession:

The conceptual artist On Kawara has 101 followers on twitter at the time of this writing. I have only 20-something. But I am On Kawara on twitter. Or rather, On Kawara on twitter is a Perl script that gets automatically run once a day on a server in a cabinet in my living room. I haven’t done anything to publicize his activities on twitter. All he does is announce, “I AM STILL ALIVE” once a day. He doesn’t follow anyone. Yet, somehow, it seeped out into the twitter community. The “Perl Net::Twitter” client name should be a dead give away.

The interesting thing about this (and my original reason for launching it) is that it blatantly negates the whole idea behind On Kawara’s “I AM STILL ALIVE” messages. Whereas those did indeed confirm that he was still alive, this doesn’t. It’s an automated process that he doesn’t even control. Were he to die, he would continue to announce “I AM STILL ALIVE”, everday, on twitter. So it really does two things; by falsely confirming that he is alive, it casts doubt on the issue but it also keeps the notion of him actively announcing that he is alive, alive.

Museum Reach Public Art – Presentation and Panel Discussion
Saturday, May 30, 1 to 3 pm
Auditorium. FREE ADMISSION. Tickets available at SAMA at 12 noon. Limited seating.

The unveiling of the twelve Museum Reach public artworks commissioned by the San Antonio River Foundation will be commemorated at SAMA during an exclusive presentation and panel discussion, moderated by David S. Rubin, The Brown Foundation Curator of Contemporary Art.  This program will feature Stuart Allen, Rolando Briseño, Carlos Cortés, Bill Fontana, Donald Lipski, Martin Richman, Mark Schlesinger and George Schroeder, the eight Museum Reach artists, and will explore the methods, concepts, and materials used in the making of their site-specific art installations.

This program is co-presented by the San Antonio Museum of Art and the San Antonio River Foundation. Follow this link to find out more about the San Antonio River Improvements Project.

From the press release:

“We are extremely excited about having public art projects of international significance so close to the Museum.  These public works will provide many new opportunities for extending our contemporary art programming into our surrounding community,” said Rubin.

Three artists with work in the SAMA collection have been chosen by the committee to create site-specific artworks.  Rolando Briseño will design three bridge railings and canopies in pedestrian areas and will relate the iconography to the history and culture of San Antonio.  Stuart Allen, the artist who created the sail cloth installation on long-term loan in the Museum’s Great Hall, will create new sculptural works for two of the underpasses, and Donald Lipski, whose sculpture also now hangs in the Great Hall, will create an installation for the I-10 Underpass.

The installation that will be most directly linked with the SAMA River Landing is the Jones Street underpass, which will be designed by San Francisco artist Bill Fontana. Bill Fontana is a pioneer in using the urban environment as a living source of music, creating sound sculptures to transform awareness of architectural spaces and visual stimulation. The composer and artist has created sound sculptures in Berlin, London, Madrid, Paris, Sydney and Tokyo, as well as in New York, Seattle and San Francisco, where he resides. Fontana graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1970 from the New School for Social Research in New York City and, over the last 30 years, his work has enlivened indoor and outdoor spaces and transformed countless museums, bridges and parks. For the installation, sequenced speakers under the bridge will emit a blend of recorded and live broadcasts gathered from multiple locations along the river, washing pedestrians and boat passengers in the subtle sounds of birds, water and urban spaces. This will be Fontana’s first permanent public work.

A fast-paced ride for casual cyclists; a slow-paced ride for those used to going fast; but typically it all works out, basically because there is no grand plan other than riding around so there’s nothing really that can go wrong, at least in theory.

River Reach sneak peek

Posted by justin on 22 May 2009 | Tagged as: art paparazzi, possibilities, public art

A little collection of photos from our upcoming river reach expansion project here in San Antonio.  I was lucky to be able to go on the official tour with Ben a few weeks back and get a first-hand view of the unfinished project.  There has already been a lot of local press covering the new reach and a blog dedicated to it exclusively on Mysa.com, so we had been notably lax in trying to get our images up online.  We’ll start with the under bridge panel installation by Stuart Allen.  Built of tightly woven metal strips painted in various colors, these panels slightly shimmer and change colors as the viewer walks past them, or floats underneath them by river barge.

Description

Produced and Directed by San Antonio filmmaker Laura Varela, the documentary chronicles the experiences of three South Texas Vietnam-era veterans who are also artists: visual artist Juan Farías, author Michael Rodríguez and poet/performance artist Eduardo Garza. The film takes the audience through the lives of the artists and their families: growing up in the Mexican American community, their military service in Vietnam, and their lives after the war. Through their stories the film examines the role of art in memory, post-traumatic stress syndrome, activism, and the current conflict in Iraq.

The film will be preceded by a reception and followed by a panel discussion with the filmmakers, Michael Rodriguez, Eduardo Garza and Dr. Norma Cantu who are featured in the film. The panel discussion will explore what the legacy of war means to an individual and to a community.

The documentary As Long As I Remember:American Veteranos was funded by grants from Humanities Texas, Latino Public Broadcasting (a part of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting Minority Consortia) and the San Antonio Office of Cultural Affairs.

Much of the documentary was filmed in the West Side of San Antonio and features poet and performance artist Eduardo Garza and the Circulo de Hombres, a men’s support group sponsored by AIT. The filmmakers are
honored to bring this film to the community.

This event is sponsored by the City of San Antonio Office of Cultural Affairs. It is FREE and open to the public. For more information please call or visit www.texasmissionindians.com
