2ND SATURDAY: Gregory at FLIGHT

Posted by thomas-cummins on 30 Jul 2009 | Tagged as: upcoming events

Sat, Aug 8
7:00 pm to 11:00 pm

Second Saturday is usually on the following weekend after First Friday but this month it falls on the very next day. Second Saturday is a monthly showcase of the area commonly known as SoFlo (a trendy abbreviation for the South Flores street where it is located) also known as the Lone Star District (named after the cross-street LoneStar Blvd. where the Lone Star Brewing Company once stood.) The area is only a few blocks South of the Blue Star District but is popular for those who want a less crowded environment than the one found at First Friday. Art galleries include One9Zero6, FL!GHT, LoneStar Studios, and Gallista Gallery.

Justin’s out of town and Second Saturday falls after First Friday but from what I can gather, curator Ed Saavedra and artists Tommy Gregory and Kelly O’Connor are working hard to put together a great show at FLIGHT.

Perkins’ Piano Pics

“ and Skye Cosby will be destroying a historic piano upon which music legends such as Sam Cooke have played. The piano was a gift from the late artist Reverend Seymour Perkins’ family to commemorate his artistic career and legacy. Perkins and Castellanos collaborated extensively for the last 2 years of Perkins’ life. Afterwards, Castellanos will build a wall sculpture out of the piano pieces…” -Raul’s MySpace

“My performance partner suffered a heat stroke last week cancelling our performance but we are now able to guarantee that on Tuesday the 28th, at 7:45 PM, at 602 Nevada (and Hackberry) at Reverend Seymour Perkins’ famous cement slab/sculpture garden, I, Raul Castellanos, will be breaking a piano given to me by the Perkins family to honor the late controversial and legendary artist from the Eastside. My assistant is Skye who is also Perkins’ only authorized biographer. I collaborated on many projects with Perkins for a bit more than 2 years and was truly honored to do so.” -Raul’s MySpace

REVIVAL CENTER. Remains of Perkins burnt house on right while Ben and Danielle watch.

It’s hard to believe, but this event was actually as good as it sounded. Raul once had an art studio next to mine and he was always pretty intense- destroying perfectly good instruments to create paintings and sculptures that helped him represent his deafness to the world. Destroying this antique, though, seemed particularly irreverent as well as the fact that, this time, his chaotic artistic performance was taking place in the middle of one of San Antonio’s poorer black neighborhoods. For the most part, passing cars would just honk curiously at the gathering crowd. There were moments, though, when this art crowd might have felt they were on the wrong side of Sunset Station. One passing neighbor yelled at a nervous spectator and told him to put the piano back together. Overall, though, I felt a real sense of community built between artists, San Antonians, and the recently bereaved. It has often been said that in art- in order to create, you must destroy. What better place, then, than at the Reverend’s Revival Center which once strived to rebuild the tattered remains of strung-out lives.

“It is high time to draw on our rich and subversive history as artists/thinkers/critics, lest we forget the past. There are any number of issues that cry out for soapboxes, bully pulpits and fuse lighters. For those who truly possess the will to provoke, the present appetite for change could be nothing less than a free-for-all.”

(notes on culture)

addthis_pub = ‘thill’;

One of these things is not like the others: burgers, beer, and video art. Seem unlikely? Heck, no! Indulging in all these delicious elements simultaneously sounds like fun to us. And to organizers Utah Snyder and Michael Stoltz, too, seeing as how they’ve started up Sam’s Video Jam, an ongoing compilation series of video treats every last Tuesday night o’ the month at 8 p.m. at Sam’s Burger Joint. The first program — lasting about an hour, with a 15-minute intermission — included videos by Pipilotti Rist, David Lynch, PES, Animal Charm, and Miranda July. Says Utah Snyder (also an artist and student in the UTSA New Media Program, and whose Luminaria project included an awesome free-art giveaway), “We’re really trying to take some of the stigma away from the words ‘video art’ and show people that a lot of what’s being made under that umbrella term is entertaining and audience-friendly, that video art isn’t always intellectually driven or boring.” Come be that audience, and see what he means: The next installment happens on the 30th, and we can hardly wait. Eat and drink on your own dime, video lovers, but be merry for free.

ARTsmart San Juan Square Apartments Mural Opening

Venue:
Blue Star Contemporary Art Center
Artist(s):
Alex Rubio
Joshua Alfaro
Michelle Rangel
Robert Velasco
Dates and times:
Friday, Jul 31, 1:00 pm 5:00 pm

Alex Rubio has had extensive experience as a community based artist. As a youth, he was compelled to depict large-scale aerosol images on the walls of his unit at the Mirasol Housing Projects. As a result, directors with the Community Cultural Arts Organization recruited him as a youth arts crew leader for their mural program based at the Cassiano Homes Housing Projects. He has spent over seventeen years engaging San Antonio community members in mural painting, an art form known for its accessibility and its contemporary relevance.

As a resident of the Westside, Rubio remembers the “Virgen de San Juan” mural painted on a wall at the San Juan Housing Projects on South Zarzamora Street. This mural became a public art icon for the surrounding community. Alex Rubio, MOSAIC Studio Manager at the Blue Star Contemporary Art Center, is excited about the chance to bring a community mural project back to his neighborhood. Mr. Rubio will design imagery for three, 4’ft. h. x 3’ft. w. mosaic medallions and one large 5’ft. h. X 9’ft. w. mosaic panel. The medallions are to be installed on the façade of the San Juan Square Apartments Live/Work building on 1938 South Zarzamora. The mosaic panel will be permanently installed above the entrance doors to the Community Center building.

Rubio and a core group of students enrolled in the Blue Star Contemporary Art Center’s Mosaic Program will work on site with San Juan resident youth in the creation and installation of hand made ceramic mosaic tile to be unveiled and dedicated on Friday, July 31, 2009 from 1:00-5:00 pm. Mosaic students will act as crew leaders and mentors for community youth during workshops and demonstrations designed to give future generations of San Juan residents a sense of contribution and ownership to its newest neighborhood icon.

Repair as the new recycling

Posted by ben on 21 Jul 2009 | Tagged as: architecture, ceramics, design, public art

Platform 21 is hyping repair as “the new recycling” with its Repair Manifesto, along with various contests and publicity efforts. It’s interesting that some of the “repairs” Platform 21 is publicizing are not functional or structural, but are really aesthetic in nature.

Jan Vormann

This Jan Vormann project is cool, but it doesn’t appear to offer much in the way of structural integrity. Then again, maybe that’s not the point — highlighting quirky projects like this means more attention for the project, and perhaps a broader reach for the “repair ideology” it is pushing. It also encourages people to think creatively about repair, and makes a chic movement out what often becomes just a greasy time sink. So here’s my contribution: a handmade porcelain teacup I broke and repaired a little while back. It’s not as flashy as Legos in a brick wall, or the “golden seams” of traditional Japanese tea bowl repair, but out of four similar cups, this is now my favorite.

PS. This cup inspired another Emvergeoning post a while back.

7:45 pm to 10:00 pm

“This time around it’s for real! My performance partner suffered a heat stroke last week cancelling our performance but we are now able to guarantee that on Tuesday the 28th, at 7:45 PM, at 602 Nevada (and Hackberry) at Reverend Seymour Perkins’ famous cement slab/sculpture garden, I, Raul Castellanos, will be breaking a piano given to me by the Perkins family to honor the late controversial and legendary artist from the Eastside. My assistant is Skye who is also Perkins’ only authorized biographer. I collaborated on many projects with Perkins for a bit more than 2 years and was truly honored to do so. Everyone please come out there to show your support and spread the word!”

Description

Raul Castellanos and Skye Cosby will be destroying a historic piano upon which music legends such as Sam Cooke have played. The piano was a gift from the late artist Reverend Seymour Perkins’ family to conmemorate his artistic career and legacy. Perkins and Castellanos collaborated extensively for the last 2 years of Perkins’ life. Afterwards, Castellanos will build a wall sculpture out of the piano pieces in the style he is renowned for.
