Show Title: Aether Drift

Aether Drift is series of new paintings interested in the architecture of structures, groups, flocks as they drift through an impossible and undefined space under the aegis of an unknown power. Aerodynamically challenged constructs collide and cavort, grouping together to form flocks that in turn form larger structures seemingly caught up in an implied eschatological narrative.

Title of Show:  BOLD IMPRESSIONS  handmade paper  linocut   woodcut    books

I began gathering material for this group of work in the Winter months of 2008. As my neighborhood cleaned its yards of brush and overgrowth and decorated the curbside with yard debris, I collected large palm leaves. I have always loved the majestic palm tree and this was an opportunity to work with these dried wonders! I began by pressing the dried leaves into freshly made sheets of pulp paper and drying the sheet. I also added pulp painting  to some sheets for color and contrast. While working on these papers I also  experimented with rust patterns on some dried handmade paper. The color of the rust and the patterns I got led me to explore linocut images that would be compatible. I believe my interest in color and design, pattern and texture continues to drive my artwork.

Description

Please join us for a reception hosted by UTSA President Ricardo Romo and Dr. Harriet Romo and the Institute of Texan Cultures.

The second installment of the Texas Contemporary Artists Series at the Institute of Texan Cultures, curated by UTSA’s Arturo Almeida, features the work of Leigh Anne Lester, addressing the place between the genesis of genetic modification and its aftereffects. Genetic modification offers humans the means to change the composition of species from the microscopic level to the macroscopic system. Lester wants the viewer to consider all the possible outcomes of introducing new species, from upsetting the natural balance, to successfully creating new species.

Lester’s drawings are composed of multiple layers of semi-transparent Mylar with a historical botanical drawn or cut on each layer. Sculpturally, Lester presents Johnson Grass created from hand-sewn clear plastic vinyl. Displayed in three islands, the arrangement implies the propagation of an invasive species.

Originally from Shreveport, La., Lester moved to San Antonio in 1989 and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting from University of Texas at San Antonio in 1993.

Put the pigeon among the paintings

Posted by ben on 12 Jul 2009 | Tagged as: bird flu, free food, rumors, silliness

I think I figured out how Chad Dawkins is reviewing all those CAM shows:

In this study, I investigated whether pigeons could be trained to discriminate between paintings that had been judged by humans as either “bad” or “good”. To do this, adult human observers first classified several children’s paintings as either “good” (beautiful) or “bad” (ugly). Using operant conditioning procedures, pigeons were then reinforced for pecking at “good” paintings. After the pigeons learned the discrimination task, they were presented with novel pictures of both “good” and “bad” children’s paintings to test whether they had successfully learned to discriminate between these two stimulus categories. The results showed that pigeons could discriminate novel “good” and “bad” paintings.

This study was published recently in Animal Cognition (hat tip).

Tuesday, July 21, 6:30 pm
Auditorium. Free. Limited seating.
Please join David S. Rubin, The Brown Foundation Curator of Contemporary Art, for a conversation with artist Franco Mondini-Ruiz.  Originally trained as a lawyer, Mondini-Ruiz turned to art making in the 1990s, a decade when artists across the United States were dealing with the constant tug-of-war between the need to identify with one’s heritage and the desire to pursue typical American ideals.  The son of an upper-class Italian father and a Mexican-American mother, Mondini-Ruiz grew up in San Antonio’s white suburbs in a household filled with dialogue and conflict based on class, ethnicity, and cultural perspectives. This complex family dynamic echoed the cultural milieu of San Antonio during the artist’s coming of age. Mondini-Ruiz lives and works in San Antonio, Texas.

Galeria Tonantzin 723 S. Brazos St., . “Cristal Contemporaneo,” a contemporary art exhibit by multiple artists that re-visualizes tradition.

In this body of work, Castillo approaches the “Bear” subculture of the gay community. Consisting primarily of large, hairy, and usually bearded men, the physical appearance and masculinity of these men runs against the hyper-femininity generally associated with homosexual males.

Through his photographs, Castillo questions conventional interpretation of gay culture, challenging long standing stereotypes and addressing issues surrounding homosexual identity.

Death of CAM Parade

Venue:
San Antonio River
Dates and times:
Sunday, Jul 26, 8:00 pm 10:00 pm

Join this costumed, musical procession, commemorating the last offices of our dearly departing Contemporary Art Month (as it is celebrated in July, that is).

Everyone is invited to participate in any form that suits them, in this contemporary art cortége, making its less-than-solemn way along the newly-renovated Museum Reach of the San Antonio RiverWalk. We begin at Sundown, congregating at the Josephine Street tunnel inlet, and march for forty to sixty minutes, south along the RiverWalk, to the El Tropicano Hotel and Tiki Bar, where we’ll share a drink.

Bring an instrument–a bell or bucket will suffice–and contribute to the percussive dirge, nodding to 23 years of aesthetic indulgence, while celebrating CAM’s March rebirth.

If you have an interest in assisting in parade planning, or in being a cavalcade captain, please drop us a line!  There will be a preparation workshop on the Sunday one week earlier, to practice percussion and put finishing touches on costumes.
