James Cobb and George Schroeder – New Works (Exhibit)
Galeria Tonantzin 723 S. Brazos St., . “Cristal Contemporaneo,” a contemporary art exhibit by multiple artists that re-visualizes tradition.
In this body of work, Castillo approaches the “Bear” subculture of the gay community. Consisting primarily of large, hairy, and usually bearded men, the physical appearance and masculinity of these men runs against the hyper-femininity generally associated with homosexual males.
Through his photographs, Castillo questions conventional interpretation of gay culture, challenging long standing stereotypes and addressing issues surrounding homosexual identity.
