Bruce Nauman, Walking in an Exagerated Manner around the Perimeter of a Square (1967-68)
Monty Python, The Ministry of Silly Walks (1970)
funny, i made a comment to sloppy about the parallel between these two upon exiting the nauman show at the menil last month, speculating that perhaps python had seen nauman’s piece…
good
i like this post lots
Nauman walking is my favorite example of how not all contemporary art stands (koff koff) the test of time. I can’t even get through 16 seconds of it.
Mr. Cleese has a clear advantage owing to costume, setting and set design, and a personal physique better suited for silly walks.
I tried to watch Nauman while the laugh track roared from the Python clip, as though the two videos had swapped sound. Sadly, it only made his silly walk all the more miserable.
Perhaps with a little more government backing, he could have made it more silly.
“You have the control, but it’s your decision how much you want to control it. If you let the wheel go, the car will drive somewhere, maybe off the road. We have done electronic accidents. And it is also possible to damage your mind. But this is the risk one takes. We have power. It just depends on what you do with it.” […]
