I know it’s short notice, but we are toasting our late friend in front of his house in King William. Uninhibited dancing in San Antonio will never be the same.

always close. always kind and knowing me with gestures benign. from there to here and over time..
writing marked mix of lousy words and wondering thoughts; waiting to know what befell my ” friend” before the words, across a line, insinuated your demise.
Thank You for alays looking after me. the long girl
So there was this day, had to be in the mid 80s, Doug and I were havin a late breakfast at Mama’s Hofbrau on San Pedro. It was real quiet, we were one of maybe three tables, and I think the foodserver was grabbin’ a smoke break, cause we musta waited five minutes with empty cups. So Doug jumps up, goes over to the hotplate, and carries the urn around the room, fillin’ cups, ours last.
Elegy to a life lived as well as it is.
Someone please write me and tell me what happened to Doug.

R.I.P
I had the pleasure of meeting this man. I remember this time, @ the mattress factory about 2 years ago, i was showing some art, there was a lot of people, this is the show that got raided by undercover narks, and while that was happening, there was all this commotion and confusion, police were surrounding the place, and i think i had been in the middle of smoking a joint, so i was in a state of panic, i could have been busted if it wasn’t for Doug; he came out screaming and hollering my name, “Alvarez, Alvarez, somebody wants to buy your art, where’s Alvarez?” with his arms swinging in the air, not really knowing who i was, he was just set on getting the attention of “Alvarez”. I think he saved my ass that night, cuz it was the perfect distraction for me to evade the long arm of the law, i got up and acknowledged that he found me, and told me to go inside the warehouse, while it was being evacuated, people pouring out cops shining lights and moving people along and Doug escorting me into the building, that was great. it just goes to show how much this man valued art. great guy, R.I.P.
Doug was unbelievably supportive of music and art. He’d help bands carry in equipment, was fun to hang out with, and his dancing, hooting and hollering made you feel like you were playing to a great crowd (and you were), even if that crowd only consisted of Doug.

Just now, Doug Manion’s name popped into my head. I hadn’t thought of him in a long time, but some sweet memories drifted over me. So I decided to Google him and found this.
Long ago at a toga party Doug burst into my apartment upstairs from the main event dressed in a white sheet … and nothing more. We sat and talked a long time about his recent divorce. We sipped wine as Doug related how he had handled this himself, without a lawyer, and had defended his case before the judge all by himself. It had cost him $38 for everything. I was quite impressed.
I knew Doug’s family but not well. I can remember an afternoon in the kitchen at that house on Cave Lane wondering why that sad statue of St. Francis was left occupying a space in his vast garage.
Sad to see you go, Doug. But I’ll bet your journey is creative.
I really really miss Doug manion.
I just heard about Doug’s departure from thie world. Doug and I were dancing partners for awhile in the late seventies. I remember one time, at Randy’s Rodeo, Asleep at the Wheel was playing. We started a stylized polka and the entire dance floor parted and surrounded us as we whirled around and around, quick stepping and high falutin’! Doug was a marvelous dancer and a charming guy. His family home on Cave Lane, was called the “mini White House” as it resembled the real thing. Doug was an iconoclast and a sweet guy. I am saddened by his early death and only hope that he is dancing and romancing in another life as I write this! Goodnight Sweet Prince!
