Oakland, California-based artists Chris Kubick & Anne Walsh will perform “A Thousand Years of Sound Effects” on Wednesday March 28, at 7pm in the UTSA Buena Vista Auditorium. The New Media Studio in the UTSA Department of Art & Art History is making this event possible. The event is free, and so is parking in the UTSA lots under the interstate south of Durango.
In this performance, Walsh and Kubick mine commercial sound effects libraries for their sounds and titles, creating surrealistic narratives in the juxtapositions between sounds and the words used to describe them. These are the same sound effects libraries which are used in Hollywood films; Kubick and Walsh take these sounds and remix them into performance pieces which range from meditative and sparse to dizzyingly kaleidoscopic. These sounds are combined with texts and images to create an improvised, performative cinema which is truly unique.
