Potentialities, an exhibit of new work by Matt Irie and Dominick Talvacchio opens at Unit B on May 18, 6:30 to 10pm.
Unit B’s press release:
With Potentialities, collaborators Matt Irie and Dominick Talvacchio continue to explore the boundary between the ordinary and the extraordinary, between the impossible and the possible, between the given and the yet-to-come. The works in this exhibition operate by coming to the very edge of ordinary reality, so as to take its seemingly stable structures and render them malleable, uncertain, unpredictable, and decidedly unstable.
Potentialities draws on a range of materials and experiences constitutive of “everyday” reality, from common utilitarian objects to our standard method of time-keeping. The subtle alteration of such materials and experiences can then bring into being something which seems to the viewer both familiar and foreign. In the anxiety unique to such arresting moments, we are called to wonder what new paths we are now free to take up.
I see what you’re saying about familiar but foreign. That image reminds me of a raincoat I had when I was marching through Antwerp.
