Our first family adventure for the New Year takes us to the Southwest School of Art & Craft’s Navarro Campus. Join us for Hands on Paper, on Saturday, January 9 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., as we explore the artistic use of paper.
TPR members and their families are invited to view “Engaged and Fragmented,” a series of exhibitions that features contemporary art showcasing the sacrifices of our soldiers using paper as a medium.
Also on exhibition is “The Art of Pulp Painting,” which features works from seventeen leading artists who use paper pulp to “paint” their works on handmade paper.
A snack lunch will be served by Crumpet’s Restaurant and Bakery.
About “Engaged and Fragmented”
Made from the sinuous fibers of nature and cloth, paper and paper pulp are the focus of Southwest School of Art & Craft’s current exhibition. “Engaged and Fragmented” features four separate portfolios that consider issues of combat and healing that will resonate with many in San Antonio, whether they are currently serving in the Armed Forces, at one of our city’s military medical centers, or are retired veterans. The four portfolio’s include:
Combat Paper
Featuring works by Drew Matott and Drew Cameron and other veterans, “Combat Paper” is a collaborative project that uses the fibers from uniforms worn in combat to create sheets of handmade paper and cathartic works of art. The uniforms are cut up, beat and formed into sheets of paper. Veterans use the transformative process of papermaking to reclaim their uniform as art and begin to embrace their experiences as a soldier in war.
The Paper Landmine Print Project
John Risseeuw, from Arizona, exhibits prints on paper that he made from plants or clothing found in areas where landmines were also present.
Do Unto Others
A collection of works from Eric Avery, M.D., a papermaker and print artist who is also a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch-Galveston.
Stealth Service
New York artist Peter Sowiski’s exhibition, Stealth Service, is a room-sized work of paper pulp and printed images, coming together to depict a life-size aircraft.
