In an original work created for Backstage at the McNay, choreographer Britt Lorraine responds to architect Jean-Paul Viguier’s design for the Stieren Center for Exhibitions. Incorporating objects by sculptor Kristy Perez (on view through January 24), We Are a Handful exemplifies Lorraine’s approach to dance:

Moving my body in a controlled space… is the only way that I know how to get to my most authentic place so that I may communicate to the viewer. I am specifically interested in the dualism between mundane activity and classic lore. In acknowledging female archetypes…I assert my creations from an honest, truthful impulse and know that tragedies and ecstasies of old are reborn new and now.

Britt Lorraine is director of Saint Lorraine Dance Company based in San Antonio, where she has taught at St. Philip’s College and the University of the Incarnate Word. Lorraine earned her MFA at the University of Iowa and her BFA from Southern Methodist University. She has also studied and performed with the Martha Graham Dance Company. She received the 2009 Artist Foundation of San Antonio award to remake the Ballets Russes’ The Rite of Spring.

Backstage at the McNay is a bi-monthly program of the McNay Theatre Group, which supports the Tobin Collection of Theatre arts and connects it to the world of live theatre in San Antonio and beyond. For more information, please phone 210 805-1720.
