Beating Time

I knew I had to find the antidote to that Hall & Oates video, and I think this is it. Mike Cooper has been one of my favorite musicians lately, embracing blues, free jazz, experimental electronics, and even exotica — and yet his recordings never sound contrived. Here’s a video for a recording he did back in 1984 with Tim Hill, Gary Jones and Paul Burwell (as Beating Time). This fits somewhere in the No Wave / Free Jazz Fusion territory…. Be sure to check out too.
Unless Mike Cooper also offers free psychoanalytic therapy, then sadly there is no antidote. However, that video did prove that Oates, yes, indeed, was the true mastermind behind the duo. Historically, second bananas don’t solo that self-assuredly. It just doesn’t happen.
wow, what a reminder that moving image art used to be considered part of the “plastic arts,” meaning “tangible”… though celluloid film is actually literally plastic. Press-type on clear leader, scratching, coloring, and othewise distressing the film, splicing and more…
Oh, those were the days.
And nowadays, as a digital immigrant, I struggle with that material v dematierial gap.
Hey, that reminds me, look out for a special screening of 16mm films coming to the UTSA Buena Vista Theater on Monday August 27, 7pm. The screening will be centered on the topic of “sampling,” and we’ll look at some celluloid examples alongside a digital video or two.
