Two philosophies found in the Ship of Theseus & John Locke’s Socks converge in a new body of work by San Antonio based performance artist, Bunnyphonic. Using materials as disparate as fossils, silver, light, felt and thread, Bunnyphonic assembles sculptures based on the identity of objects over time. The myth of the Ship of Theseus tells a story of a seafaring crew that gradually replaces every piece of its sailing ship over an epic voyage. Eventually, it becomes a new ship yet there is still a question if the pieces were kept and reassembled, would that be the original ship?
John Locke entertained a similar woolgathering thought as he patched up a sock, thinking that over time, if he patched the sock repeatedly, it would become a different sock. Our relationships to objects over time shift in interstitial space, created an ambiguous landscape ripe with transformation.
In keeping with previous installations, Bunnyphonic has culled a soundscape scintillating with sonar and radar pings, buoys, dissected bird songs, Navy theme songs and turbulent waters. There will be a gallery performance at 10pm on Friday, November 16th, 2007.
