Saatchi Showdown

claire morgan

Saatchi takes its new Stuart online art gallery into a High Noon showdown. Here’s your chance to be a critic with a simple 10 star system. Want to get some feedback on your latest work? Set up an account. Log in and start clicking for the best and worst of the Saatchi gang. The Stuart website is similar to a MySpace networking site and I’ve found it helpful to look for new artists or artists in another country/city whenever I’m traveling. Absolutely vital when you’re trying to find out if a residency in Finland is worth the jet lag. There are some simple rules for posting artwork and rating other artists. Claire Morgan’s Making a Killing [pictured above] is one of 3,000 artworks competing in the Showdown. The lucky winner will receive 1,000 euros and the privilege of showing their work in sparkling new Saatchi Gallery. Another contestant, Turkish pixie Ciseren Korkut, offers a nice snapshot of Cappadocia. Memnun oldum. land of the fairy chimneys

TCA Update

Posted by ben on 23 Feb 2007 | Tagged as: announcements, opportunities

I tried digging up information about the nixing of the TCA, but I guess I’m just not much of an investigative journalist, ’cause I got nowhere. But, via ‘Bout What I Sees, I found an article on Cantanker about major political problems for TCA.

Written in November of last year, the article details dissatisfaction with the management of TCA:

The Sunset Review Commission threw the Texas Commission on the Arts a startling blow last session when it reversed its staff’s recommendations and gave TCA only a two-year continuation, rather than the customary 12-year stay that most state agencies are granted.

The Sunset Commission, a 12-member body of legislators and public members appointed by the Lieutenant Governor and the Speaker of the House, was concerned with the dual direction the agency was taking as being both a funding organization and a service-oriented organization. They felt TCA should prioritize its role as a funding entity and were concerned that the agency was not taking its directives seriously. As a result, they took the necessary steps to send TCA a strong wake-up call.

The same article lays out the consequences of dissolving the 40-year-old state agency. Not only would the $3 million of state funding for the arts dry up, but the $800,000 Texas gets from NEA would also be jeopardized. Considering the amount of money Texas artists and institutions get from other sources, the loss of less than $4 million a year would not exactly be a mortal blow to the arts community. However, I know from personal experience that the TCA does provide some unique funding services, especially for arts workshops in schools, that would be missed.

The best thing for us to do now is contact state-level Senators and Representatives to try to find advocates for the agency. Rep. Bob Deuell formed the Cultural Resources Caucus in October of last year, which will hopefully be an ally in this battle. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more…

The Future of the Arts in Texas

Posted by justin on 19 Feb 2007 | Tagged as: announcements, opportunities

Got this in email today from Michele Monseau over at Three Walls Gallery:

Texas Artists Call to Action:

The Governor’s office has a proposal to assume control over the Texas Commission on the Arts. The 40-year state agency would be eliminated and its power and agency would become a part of the Governor’s office. The future of the state arts supporting agency is at a crossroads and we need every Texas artist to wake up and contact their state representative and state senator and ask them to join the Texas Cultural Resources Caucus.

By your state representative and state senator joining the Texas Cultural Resources Caucus, artists will have a centralized and direct legislative power base to review the Governor’s proposal and the future of the Texas Arts industry. The political and funding implications for the Texas Commission on the Arts being under the Governor’s office need to be studied and reviewed carefully. The politics of the arts under the Governor can be
beneficial with an arts-supportive Governor but what happens next Governor or the next?

Is this a short-sighted fix to a battered agency or the long-term solution? The proper analysis has not yet been done therefore it is important for all artists to become engaged and encourage their state representatives and state senators to join the Texas Cultural Resources Caucus where we can have a centralized political discussion and analysis of this latest proposal. The more legislative members involved in the Texas Cultural Resources Caucus would also create more power regarding the fate of the Texas Commission on the Arts created by the grassroots army of Texas artists.

There are already an estimated 50 House and Senate members who have joined the Texas Cultural Resources Caucus. To contact or to identify your state representative or senator, go to the Texas Legislature website.

Please pass this E-mail action alert to every Texas artist and Texas’ arts group and encourage them to get involved today.

Creative Capital Grant

Posted by ben on 02 Feb 2007 | Tagged as: opportunities

This one’s a doozy, folks. The Creative Capital Foundation offers grants for visual artists and video / film artists, and on average awards $25,000 to each grantee. The most they have awarded a single applicant is $50,000. In addition to the financial support, however, they offer workshops and advice on how to advance your career:

The Creative Capital Professional Development Program (PDP) was launched in 2003 to offer the career-building component of Creative Capital’s Artist Services Program to a broader community of artists. The program is designed to help empower artists to better manage their professional paths by providing them with the training and tools they need to thrive in the marketplace.

To apply for this grant, you must submit an inquiry between February 5 and March 5. You must be at least 25 years old, a U.S. citizen (or permanent resident), and a working artist with at least 5 years professional experience.

Go get ‘em tiger!

Take the Money And…

Money walks and bullshit talks

Applications for two significant grants from the Dallas Museum of Art are due March 1st. The Degolyer and Kimbrough Funds are separated by age range as well as state residency. If you’re between 15 and 25 years of age and you’ve been lollygaggin around Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona or Colorado for the last four years, then you’re eligible to win $1,500. If you’re a Texan and you haven’t hit the doomsday age of 30, well then, you could be the lucky duckling that lands a golden egg of $3,500 courtesy of the Kimbrough Fund.

If you’re a Texan and you’re now living in the Stygian landscape of the 30+ demographic, then the joke’s on the younguns cause you’re eligible for the Dozier Travel Grant which tips the benevolent art scales at $6,000. Cue Steve Miller Band here.

Gibraltar Point Residency

Posted by ben on 10 Jan 2007 | Tagged as: opportunities

Artscape is offering a residency program for artists on Toronto Island, Canada. The submission deadline is February 21st, and the program runs from June 1 to June 30. From their website:

The Gibraltar Point Residency transcends political, aesthetic and geographic boundaries, welcomes diversity and provides a spawning ground for unique cultural alliances. The program is open to Canadian and international artists who are engaged in the research, development or creation of work. Emerging, mid-career and established professional artists are invited to apply. Participants in the residency program receive accommodation, a private work studio and all meals at no cost. Travel and material costs are the responsibility of participating artists.

NOTE: This program accepts all kinds of artists, including musicians and writers; I even saw a costume designer in their list of alumni. It looks like a good opportunity to work alongside creative people dealing with a wide variety of media.
