Celebrating 36 years of creativity, the Fiesta Arts Fair at the Southwest School of Art & Craft is an official “kick-off event” for the renowned Fiesta® San Antonio – 10 days of merriment, pageantry, parties and parades, bringing thousands of visitors to the Alamo City every April.

Last year’s Fiesta Arts Fair was voted the”Best Art & Craft Fair” of the year in San Antonio, and one of the top three most “family friendly Fiesta events” by the readers of the city’s weekly paper.

In February 2008, San Antonio’s Fiesta Arts Fair was named one of America’s Top Ten Art Fairs and Festivals (coming in at #7, to be exact) by the national magazine, American Style.

The 2-day Fiesta Arts Fair is exceptionally welcoming for every generation of your family, with 120 top artists from around the U.S, plenty of live music, a Children’s Art Garden and (as with all true Fiesta events), good food. There’s something for everyone in a relaxed, shady setting.

All proceeds benefit the classes and community programs of The Southwest School of Art & Craft.

Artists

National Show, with a Fiesta Flair
Since 1973, the Fiesta Arts Fair has drawn artists from around the nation and the region, whose work has been selected by a juried panel.

In 2009, 125 artists from 23 states – from Maine to Washington – will display and sell works in metal, ceramics, glass, painting, photography, textures and jewelry.  See the complete list of 2009 artists.

Entertainment

While the art is always the main attraction, Fiesta Arts Fair features two stages of live music throughout its two days. From jazz to Tex-Mex, from folk to Texas blues, there’s always something to tap your toe to.

Children’s Art Garden

Adult artist-teachers will guide children of all ages through the hands-on creation of Fiesta medals, clay sculptures, stained glass, monoprints, face painting, beading and quilling, metal repousse, art pots and Fiesta crowns. For Morrissey Fans, 3 February 2008

Author: groggo from Toronto, Canada

If you like old-style, traditional documentaries — i.e. armies of talking heads, yakking endlessly to the camera — this is your kind of film.

The Irish-English singer Morrissey is the subject here. He’s an interesting character, but he doesn’t appear in the film. The camera follows a mob of people (almost all Los Angeles Chicanos, for some reason), who offer us hero worship of a particular kind. They analyze the guy down to microscopic levels: his sexual proclivities (or lack thereof; is he really Asexual?), his hair, his grooming, his politics, the meaning of his lyrics, what it means when a nude man appears on one of his album covers.

And on it goes. Some of the conversations are interesting (he’s gay, he’s not, he’s not even sexual, etc.), but you must stay with these people to really appreciate what they are saying. And that’s the problem — the director offers us no diversions, not even routine cutaways. It’s just not-stop talking by fans in the throes of idolatry.

It certainly helps if you’re a fan of Morrissey (and the Smiths singing group). If you aren’t, there’s a good chance you’ll find all of this stuff pretty boring. A documentary spanning more than 60 minutes, offering a parade of relentless talking heads, with nothing to balance it, is not exactly riveting.

“Distinctively Japanese”

Posted by ben on 10 Apr 2009 | Tagged as: uncategorized

There are other reasons to be cautious about explaining Japanese artistic practices as direct continuations of time-honored customs. The artistic concepts purportedly shaping all Japanese art (wabi, yugen, iki, mono no aware) often turn out to have complex and ambivalent histories, during which they were redefined for various purposes. More generally, a great many “distinctively Japanese” traditions, from emperor worship to the rules of sumo, were devised in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries by elite factions forging new national identities for a modernizing society. We are not in the habit of explaining contemporary Hollywood style by reference to northern European Renaissance painting, so why should ancient aesthetic traditions be relevant to twentieth-century Japanese film? Someone may respond that whereas we have lost touch with premodern customs and ways of thinking, the Japanese have retained a living relation to theirs. Yet this idea itself is no less an invented tradition, with sources in twentieth-century Japanese ethnology and cultural theory.

Rex Hausmann: Revisitation
Blue Star Contemporary Art Center
Opens Thursday, Apr. 30, 6-8 pm
Through June 14.

Topper (1937) is a comedy film which tells the story of a stuffy, stuck-in-his-ways man who is haunted by the ghosts of a fun-loving married couple. It was adapted by Eric Hatch, Jack Jevne and Eddie Moran from the novel by Thorne Smith. The film was directed by Norman Z. McLeod, produced by Hal Roach, and distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The movie stars Constance Bennett, Cary Grant, Roland Young, and Billie Burke. Topper was a huge hit with movie audiences in the summer of 1937 and Cary Grant had a percentage deal on the film. He made quite a bit of money on the successful film.

It was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Young) and Best Sound, Recording.[1]

Topper was followed by the sequels Topper Takes a Trip (1938)[2] and Topper Returns (1941).[3] There was a television series of the same name,[4] which premiered in 1953 and ran for two seasons, starring Leo G. Carroll, Robert Sterling and Anne Jeffreys. In 1973, a television pilot for a proposed new series Topper Returns (1973)[5] was produced, starring Roddy McDowall, Stefanie Powers and John Fink. A TV movie remake, Topper (1979)[6] was also produced starring Kate Jackson, Jack Warden and Andrew Stevens.

In 1985, Topper (1937) was one of the first films to be re-released in color using a controversial process known as film colorization.

Bill Meceita, a boy whose family was murdered in front of him by a gang, sets out 15 years later to exact revenge. On his journey, he finds himself continually sparring and occasionally cooperating with Ryan, a gunfighter on his own quest for vengeance, who knows more than he says about Bill’s tragedy. The film has lapsed into public domain.[1]

[edit] Dialogue

Ryan: Somebody once wrote, “Revenge is a dish that has to be eaten cold.” Hot as you are, you’re liable to end up with indigestion.

[Once again following Ryan to recover his horse, Bill arrives at the Holly Spings train station.]
Station Master: This guy told me a pal of his’d be coming along. He said I should give you the horse and a kiss. The horse is there, waiting for you. Eh, n-now, where do you want that kiss?
Bill: [grimacing] No thanks. I’ll settle for the horse.

[edit] Taglines

  • This is revenge… And there’s nothing sweet about it!
  • When you’ve waited fifteen years to find a man… it’s a shame you can only kill him once!

[edit] Cast

[edit] In Popular Culture

  • Whenever the angered hero encountered one of the bandits who wronged him and killed his family, footage of the wrong being avenged is superimposed over the hero’s face. As a homage, this technique was used by Quentin Tarrantino in Kill Bill whenever The Bride confronted one of the Deadly Vipers.
  • The main theme of Death Rides a Horse is used in Kill Bill. It is the trilling flute and mixed choral piece played when The Bride calls out O-Ren and her bodyguards at the House of Blue Leaves.
  • The scene when the main character, Bill, watches his family being murdered is referenced in the animated scene of Kill Bill. Here the skull necklace is depicted as a skull ring, worn by the man who kills O-rens father.
  • “Death rides a Horse” is a 1970 reggae single from the Hippy Boys. It appears on the B-side of Max Romeos single “melting pot” on the Pama Unity label
  • “Death rides a Horse” is a name of a track on the Russian Circles album Enter
