Saatchi takes its new Stuart online art gallery into a High Noon showdown. Here’s your chance to be a critic with a simple 10 star system. Want to get some feedback on your latest work? Set up an account. Log in and start clicking for the best and worst of the Saatchi gang. The Stuart website is similar to a MySpace networking site and I’ve found it helpful to look for new artists or artists in another country/city whenever I’m traveling. Absolutely vital when you’re trying to find out if a residency in Finland is worth the jet lag. There are some simple rules for posting artwork and rating other artists. Claire Morgan’s Making a Killing [pictured above] is one of 3,000 artworks competing in the Showdown. The lucky winner will receive 1,000 euros and the privilege of showing their work in sparkling new Saatchi Gallery. Another contestant, Turkish pixie Ciseren Korkut, offers a nice snapshot of Cappadocia. Memnun oldum.

I tried digging up information about the nixing of the TCA, but I guess I’m just not much of an investigative journalist, ’cause I got nowhere. But, via ‘Bout What I Sees, I found an article on Cantanker about major political problems for TCA.
Written in November of last year, the article details dissatisfaction with the management of TCA:
The Sunset Review Commission threw the Texas Commission on the Arts a startling blow last session when it reversed its staff’s recommendations and gave TCA only a two-year continuation, rather than the customary 12-year stay that most state agencies are granted.
The Sunset Commission, a 12-member body of legislators and public members appointed by the Lieutenant Governor and the Speaker of the House, was concerned with the dual direction the agency was taking as being both a funding organization and a service-oriented organization. They felt TCA should prioritize its role as a funding entity and were concerned that the agency was not taking its directives seriously. As a result, they took the necessary steps to send TCA a strong wake-up call.
The same article lays out the consequences of dissolving the 40-year-old state agency. Not only would the $3 million of state funding for the arts dry up, but the $800,000 Texas gets from NEA would also be jeopardized. Considering the amount of money Texas artists and institutions get from other sources, the loss of less than $4 million a year would not exactly be a mortal blow to the arts community. However, I know from personal experience that the TCA does provide some unique funding services, especially for arts workshops in schools, that would be missed.
The best thing for us to do now is contact state-level Senators and Representatives to try to find advocates for the agency. Rep. Bob Deuell formed the Cultural Resources Caucus in October of last year, which will hopefully be an ally in this battle. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more…

Apparently the city planners, in their wisdom, have decreed that San Antonio requires a master plan for public art. They are now seeking the counsel of artists, architects, and designers to aid in the institution and melioration of said plan. To articulate your vision for the art schema to be adopted, convene at the Central Library Auditorium on February 13, 2007, from 7-9 pm. Parking validation and refreshments will be provided.

I know we’ve all been REALLY WORRIED (about bird flu) psssstt..they just found a probable cure in Cod enzymes from Iceland.. Just thought you might find that interesting, seaing that is been quite icy in San Antonio as of late. Myself, I’ve been holed up in my little warm home, fighting off the chills and talking shop to my marnball. This morning, though I was so excited to see the light of day (err.. gray) that I dove into my camera and shot some photos of silly winter stuff, like icicles, and lamposts and hockey pucks.. (uh wait, no hockey pucks.. ) but lots of icicles. OH , yeah I also dove through the last issue of the SA Current, and lo and behold there was a small blurb style writeup on Emvergeoning. Yeah, go us! We’re famosos. soo.. if your interested.. heres some photos of San Antonio under ice..
The Photo below is proof of the cheesy icicle photos I speak of..just click on the link below..you know its killing you..

Announcing: The Official Emvergeoning San Antonio Gallery Map. Using Google Maps we have mapped out all of the San Anto galleries we could think of. Wherever possible, we’ve included a link to the web site, address, phone number, and hours. Some of the locations are slightly off (e.g. wrong side of the street), and we couldn’t figure out the hours for some galleries that we know have regular hours. We’ll fix these problems when we get a chance, but for now it should help you locate the city’s many gallery spaces. If you think of galleries that are missing, please note them in the comments to this post.
