EXHIBITION
McNay Art Museum Tom Slick: International Art Collector Exhibition
JUNE 10, 2009 – SEPTEMBER 13, 2009
Tom Slick (1916–1962) is an important figure in San Antonio’s history. A legendary explorer, inventor, businessman, and Biomedical Research, the Southwest Research Institute, and philanthropist, he founded the Southwest Foundation for the Mind Science Foundation, among many well-known accomplishments in his short life. Slick’s achievements as a collector of modern art, however, have been under appreciated. Slick’s passion for scientific research, along with his interest in exploring natural phenomena and the life of the mind, indicate an openness in all things, including art and architecture. His world travels and his respect for different cultures also caused his collection to be international in scope. Featuring over 50 paintings and sculptures, this exhibition reunites for the first time the works given to the McNay by the Tom Slick estate in 1973 with those held by his family in their private collections. Slick’s collection was formed from the mid 1950s until his death, during the time he was building a landmark contemporary house designed by O’Neil Ford as a setting for his art. Among the iconic paintings in the Slick collection at the McNay are Pablo Picasso’s Portrait of Sylvette and Georgia O’Keeffe’s From the Plains I. Among the sculptures are major works by Barbara Hepworth and Isamu Noguchi. The family is lending additional works by all of these artists, as well as master
works by William Zorach and William Baziotes, a fascinating group of contemporary British and Indian paintings, and figurative sculptures by Texas artist Charles Umlauf, among many others. The Tom Slick collection offers a rich and varied picture of the art of his time.

EXHIBITION
McNay Art Museum Elegant Enigmas: The Art of Edward Gorey Exhibition
JUNE 10 – SEPTEMBER 13, 2009
Carnivorous plants, falling masonry, and uninvited guests fill the unique, imaginary world of American author and illustrator Edward Gorey (1925–2000). His stories and accompanying illustrations maintain a delicate balance between the hilarious and the horrific, often resembling children’s books. Gorey is well known to millions for his images used in the animated title sequence for PBS’s program Mystery! More than 175 of Gorey’s original works are included in this exhibition, organized by the Brandywine River Museum. Drawings for books, illustrations produced for other writers, and theatrical designs offer a rich exploration of the artist’s output. Among the book titles represented are The Blue Aspic, The Hapless Child, The Loathsome Couple, and The Unstrung Harp, as well as Gorey’s illustrations for T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats. Costume designs for the comic operetta The Mikado, a backdrop for the ballet Giselle, and a set design for the play Dracula are included among his works for theatre.
Museum Admission applies to Non-members (Adults $8, Students with I.D. – $5, Seniors – $5, Active military – $5, Children 12 and under – free) and is Free for Members. No charge for general museum admission on Thursdays from 4 to 9 pm and on the first Sunday of the month. Parking is free in the McNay Visitor Parking Lot. Description

Panel discussion: “Water Flows In All Directions”

Auditorium. Free and open to the public.
In conjunction with the opening of the River Walk in the Museum Reach area and the concurrent exhibition, Waterflow, The Brown Foundation Curator of Contemporary Art, David S. Rubin moderates a panel featuring four artists from the exhibition: Justin Boyd, Ansen Seale, Liz Ward, and Liliana Wilson. The panel will explore different approaches to water as an image in contemporary art. Boyd’s recent new media work looks at the American traditions of music associated with the Mississippi River. Seale uses a digital “slitscan” camera of his own invention to show water in continuous movement. Ward’s abstract watercolors call attention to environmental erosion along coastlines. In Wilson’s paintings, water becomes a metaphoric vehicle for social commentary on current border issues.

Illusions of Minimalism

Posted by ben on 01 Jun 2009 | Tagged as: architecture, image & sound, music, responses/reviews, sound art

In a post at my new blog on Glasstire, I discuss the relationship between Rudolf de Crignis (currently showing at Lawrence Markey) and La Monte Young, as a way of exploring uses of the term minimalist. This comparison could be extended to some of the other minimalist composers, such as Phill Niblock, who activate architectural space through dense layers of sound at high volume.

But it’s worth noting that while the perceived variation induced by the Dream House’s standing waves calls attention to the physical space, the effect of these relatively small de Crignis paintings is to absorb the viewer in an alternate, purely visual space. It is perhaps the same effect Francis Bacon aims at when : “You would love to be able in a portrait to make a Sahara of the appearance — to make it so like, yet seeming to have the distances of the Sahara.” So while de Crignis’ paintings play with visual perception in a way that is analogous to Young’s or Niblock’s effect on the ear, they are perhaps more disorienting because they absorb the viewer in layers of paint, supplanting for a moment the physical space around them. It is interesting, though, that de Crignis is sometimes compared to James Turrell, an artist who does work with light sources and architecture in a way that is more obviously akin to Marian Zazeela’s light installation in the Dream House.
