In my first post in a long time over at Glasstire, I call out Elaine Wolff for her characterization of Daniel Saldaña as “post-contemporary.” I like the pieces he has on display at David Shelton Gallery, but her implication that his art is at odds with current art-making trends is a stretch, and I think a misreading of what’s happening in the art world.

The LA Times has a story up about the Los Angeles Urban Rangers, a group of “geographers, environmental and art historians, artists, curators, architects, and others” who dress up like park rangers and teach people how to enjoy public urban space responsibly. They lead urban safaris, such as a “guided hike of Hollywood Boulevard that deconstructed the famous street as if it were a natural park.” They teach people how to (legally) enjoy Malibu beach fronts where the homeowners have often (illegally) posted “Private Beach” signs.
This is what performance art should be: seductively entertaining while challenging implicit assumptions about what constitutes public space and how it should be used. In their own way, the Final Friday bike rides (and Bike Gang Summits) in San Antonio encourage this kind of urban exploration, albeit with less explicitly pedagogical goals. Mark Jones and the rides’ other organizers lead bikers through obscure urban environments on the edges of downtown, descending on unlikely VFW halls and pocket parks. It’s a social sculpture if there ever was one.

Breaking Away is a 1979 coming of age film that tells the story of four teenagers in Bloomington, Indiana who have graduated from high school and are not sure what they want to do with their lives, other than hang out and go swimming in an abandoned limestone quarry. It stars Dennis Christopher, Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern (his first film role), Jackie Earle Haley, Barbara Barrie and Paul Dooley. The movie was written by Steve Tesich, an alumnus of Phi Kappa Psi at Indiana University, whose original working title for the screenplay was Bambino, and directed by Peter Yates.
It won the 1979 Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for Steve Tesich, and was nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Barbara Barrie), Best Director, Best Music, Original Song Score and Its Adaptation or Best Adaptation Score and Best Picture.
The film is 8th on the List of America’s 100 Most Inspiring Movies compiled by The American Film Institute in 2006. In June 2008, AFI revealed its “Ten top Ten”—the best ten films in ten “classic” American film genres—after polling over 1,500 people from the creative community. Breaking Away was acknowledged as the eighth best film in the sports genre.[1][2]
A short-lived television series prequel, also titled Breaking Away, aired in 1980.

Dave (Dennis Christopher), Mike (Dennis Quaid), Cyril (Daniel Stern) and Moocher (Jackie Earle Haley) are adolescent working-class Americans living in a midwestern college town, who often clash with the more affluent college students. The four have just graduated from high school.
Dave is obsessed with bicycle racing. His down-to-earth, blue-collar father Raymond (Paul Dooley) is puzzled and exasperated by his son’s love of Italian music and culture, which the son associates with bicycling, and his precious Italian Masi road racing bicycle. However, his mother Evelyn (Barbara Barrie) is more understanding. Dave masquerades as an Italian exchange student to romance a university co-ed (Robyn Douglass), even serenading her one evening outside her sorority house window.
When a professional Italian bicycling team comes to town for a race, Dave is thrilled to be competing with them. However, the Italians become irked when Dave is able to keep up with and even talk to them during the race. One of them jams a bike pump in Dave’s wheel, causing him to crash. This leaves Dave disillusioned and depressed.
Dave’s friends soon persuade him to form a cycling team for the annual Indiana University Little 500 bicycle race. They race under the name “Cutters” (a euphemism for “stoners”, the industrial stonecutters who worked the Indiana Limestone quarries of southern Indiana) against university intramural teams. Dave is so much better than the other competitors, he rides without a break and builds up a large lead, while the other teams have to switch cyclists every few laps. However, he is injured and has to stop. After some hesitation, his friends take turns pedaling, but soon their lead evaporates. Finally, Dave has himself taped into his bike and starts making up ground, winning on the last lap. Afterwards, his father shows Dave how proud he is of his son.
Dooley and Christopher also played father and son in the 1978 film A Wedding and in the 2003 Law & Order: Criminal Intent television episode “Cherry Red“.
Barrie, Haley, and Ashton continued their roles in the prequel TV series.
The Little 500 bicycle race that forms the centerpiece of the plot is an actual race held annually at Indiana University. A reenactment of the race was staged for the film in the “old” Memorial Stadium on the IU campus, which was demolished shortly after the filming of the movie.
The team is based on the 1962 Phi Kappa Psi Little 500 champions, which featured legendary rider and Italian enthusiast Dave Blase, who provided screenwriter and fellow Phi Kappa Psi team member Steve Tesich the inspiration for the main character in the movie. Blase, together with team manager Bob Stoller, provided the name of this character: Dave Stoller. In the 1962 race, Blase rode 139 out of 200 laps and was the victory rider crossing the finish line, much like the main character in the film. Blase himself appears in the movie as the race announcer.
Many of the scenes in the movie were filmed on the Indiana University campus. The Italian restaurant in the film is now a Thai restaurant (Siam House at 430 E. 4th St). Dave Stoller’s house in the film is located at the corner of Lincoln and Dodds. Other scenes were filmed outside the Delta Delta Delta sorority house (818 E. 3rd St) and along Jordan. The limestone quarry (swimming scene) is private property outside town.
The Bollywood movie Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar is greatly inspired by Breaking Away.

Please help support Bihl Haus by attending one of the most beautiful dance performances you’ll see all year in San Antonio! RAMAYANA, the classical Indian dance co-produced by Bihl Haus right here in San Antonio, premieres this Saturday, Aug. 22nd, 6:30 pm at THE CARVER (Jo Long) THEATER, 226 N. Hackberry. The production is directed and choreographed by Dr. Sreedhara, founder of Kaveri Natya Yoga, our partner. Principle Indian dancers are coming from New York, San Diego and across Texas to perform. The cast is also made up of dancers from San Antonio, too, including the very elegant Dr. Rajam Ramamurthy, director of the Arathi School of Indian Dance.
RAMAYANA will be danced in the tradition of Bharathanatyam, an ancient Indian form. Sculptural in execution, this dance style employs meaningful hand positions and precise leg and footwork to tell a classic story of the triumph of good over evil. Dancers–forty, yes forty of them!!!–don intricate hand-made costumes in brilliantly colored silks lavishly adorned with beads and ribbons. Each dancer wears tinkling brass ankle bells that create rhythm in response to the slap! of a full flat bare foot. Male dancers are bare chested save for suspender-like straps and golden pectoral chains. Elegant female dancers are coiffed in flowers and ribbons. Their long thick black braids fly behind them as they gracefully spin and dip to exquisite music–music produced and recorded in India specifically for this production and featuring some of India’s finest traditional musicians.
This performance of RAMAYANA is the first fundraiser of the year for Bihl Haus Arts. We hope that you’ll help support Bihl Haus by purchasing your tickets today, priced at a very reasonable $10 general/$5 seniors, children & military w/ ID. Tickets are available at www.ticketmaster.com, by calling , at all Ticketmaster outlets, including HEB, or by calling the Carver Box Office, at .
We hope to see you at The Carver Theater, 226 N. Hackberry, on Saturday, August 22nd, at 6:30 pm!

The identity of women, as it is passed on through stories, is transformed into embroidered clothing and wall hangings. These stories are ingrained in our innermost selves as glimpses of the past, and are reflected in our dreams, myths, and fantasies. The format of a bedroom represents something intimate, and the wardrobe addresses how who we are clothes our outer selves. Through this installation, the viewer sees myths likened to trying on a dress or wearing a certain cloak. Priestess, Queen and Goddess… clothing is a symbol of power. Eden’s Room is an assemblage of many cultures with their exciting heritage of ideas, icons, and stories.

ARTifacts
(notes on culture)
The small traffic island at the intersection of Josephine and North St. Mary’s Streets, directly outside the Josephine Street Theater, hosts three abstracted, angular, yet weirdly anthropomorphic metal sculptures, a family of sorts entitled “Cor-Linche Triad.” Welded and donated by sculptor Michael Bigger back in 1989, they honor the memory of San Anto’s real-estate arts visionary, Arthur “Hap” Veltman — River Walk developer, Bonham Exchange founder, Blue Star fairy godfather, and San Anto-urban lifestyle and gay-rights pioneer [see “The Visionary,” November 25, 2008.] In the 20 years since Hap fell to AIDS, Bigger’s triad has fallen victim, at least three times, to collisions with automobiles. Their most recent re-installation was spearheaded in no small part due to Gene Elder, art- and LGBT activist, bon vivant, Archivist of the HAPPY Foundation LGBT Archives, occasional Current on-the-street correspondent, and Veltman’s best friend.
This Tuesday, at 10 a.m., the City of San Antonio Parks and Rec Department and the San Antonio Conservation Society will host a dedication ceremony for the Arthur Veltman Urban Art Island. Ray Palmer, the director of nearby High Wire Arts, will serve coffee. Happy’s legacy will be finally made into official San Anto arts history. And, hopefully, nobody will get run over.
