Join Texas Public Radio for our latest Hands On family adventure, as we celebrate the rich cultural heritage that is imprinted on the landscape we inhabit.

We’re teaming up with Land Heritage Institute and their ongoing collaboration between independent organizations s to celebrate FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA with a photography-based art installation in a century-old, stacked-stone corn-crib on the property.

Land Heritage Institute, located on the banks of the Medina River in south San Antonio, interprets, maintains and develops 1200 acres of open space as a living land museum, preserving archeological, cultural, educational, environmental, historical and recreational resources.

To celebrate FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA, Land Heritage Institute has curated “The Corn Crib,” by San Antonio artist Ansen Seale, exploring how our lived culture is shaped by our natural landscape.

Texas Public Radio members are invited to a pre-opening reception for this important land art event at Land Heritage Institute. LHI’s partner organizations will provide family-friendly activities to help us appreciate the beauty of the Texas landscape and our cultural heritage.

The afternoon will be filled with family-friendly activities and displays that include hayrides, horses, longhorns, corn-husk dolls, scavenger hunts, and more…

About Ansen Seale

Ansen Seale is an artist living and working in San Antonio, Texas. He received a BA in Journalism, Broadcasting and Film and Studio Art from Trinity University in San Antonio, 1983. His photographs have been exhibited in museums and galleries and have been collected by corporations and institutional and private collectors.

Seale works with a special digital panoramic camera of his own invention. This camera captures a vertical slit of the scene over and over in rapid succession, in effect, swapping the horizontal dimension of the image plane for the dimension of time. Instead of mirroring the world as seen around us, this camera records a hidden reality. The apparent distortions in the images all happen in-camera, as the image is being recorded without the use of digital manipulations. Recently, his work has taken a turn away from the purely photographic with the use of iconic imagery and unconventional media such as his own blood.

Spectators vs. Participant

Posted by thomas-cummins on 14 Sep 2009 | Tagged as: books, essays, performance art

In his short essay ‘Romancing the Looky-Loos‘, Dave Hickey shares his interesting viewpoint on the evolution of coöptation as viewed through its audience. He makes a distinction between Spectators(the titular looky-loos) and the Particiant. You can spectate the full article here or participate with it .

“spectators invariably align themselves with authority. They have neither the time nor the inclination to make decisions. They just love the winning side— the side with the chic building, the gaudy doctorates, and the star-studded cast. They seek out spectacles whose value is confirmed by the normative blessing of institutions and corporations. In these venues, they derive sanctioned pleasure or virtue from an accredited source, and this makes them feel secure, more a part of things. Participants, on the other hand, do not like this feeling. They lose interest at the moment of accreditation, always assuming there is something better out there, something brighter and more desirable, something more in tune with their own agendas. And they may be wrong, of course. The truth may indeed reside in the vision of full professors and corporate moguls, but true participants persist in not believing this. They continue looking.

Thus, while spectators must be lured, participants just appear, looking for that new thing—the thing they always wanted to see—or the old thing that might be seen anew—and having seen it, they seek to invest that thing with new value. They do this simply by showing up; they do it with their body language and casual conversation, with their written commentary, if they are so inclined, and their disposable income, if it falls to hand. Because participants, unlike spectators, do not covertly hate the things they desire. Participants want their views to prevail, so they lobby for the embodiment of what they lack.

The impact of these participatory investments is tangible across the whole range of cultural production. It is more demonstrable, however, in “live arts” like music, theater, and art than in industrial arts like publishing, film, and recording. Because in the “live arts,” participatory investment, as it accumulates, increases the monetary value of the product. You increase the value of an artwork just by buying it, if you are a participant. Thus, you will probably pay more for the next work by that artist you buy. You do the same if you recruit all your friends to go listen to a band in a bar. If all your friends show up and have a good time, you will almost certainly pay more at the door the next time the band plays. But that’s the idea: to increase the social value of the things you love…”

Fotofronteras
Photography by Immigrant Youth in Detention and Emergency Shelter

Opening Reception
Monday, September 21, 2009
6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Johnston Branch Library
6307 Sun Valley, San Antonio, TX 78227

The photos are striking, sad, poignant, humorous: clouds drifting over a high fence, a small plant growing out of parched and cracked soil, a mop wearing a hat, a silhouetted hand pressed against a window through which a road is dimly visible.

These are photos by immigrant youth, overwhelmingly from Central America, currently being held in detention while their immigration status is sorted out. Placed in the care of Child Protective Services, these children live in Emergency Shelters, where they are provided a number of services, including lawyers to help with their immigration hearings, school, and English language instruction.

Fotofronteras is an innovative vocational photography program developed to extend the frontiers of these youths’ lives by opening opportunities for meaningful employment and entrepreneurial activities in the field of photography. Developed by Dianne Monroe and Fadela Castro, the program is part of The Healing Arts, a collaborative managed by Jump-Start Performance Co. The program was made possible by a generous grant from the City of San Antonio’s Neighborhood Arts Program. The exhibit takes place at the Johnston Branch Library in Council District 4, in collaboration with Baptist Child & Family Services, who cares for the youth involved in this program. This exhibit is part of Fotoseptiembre 2009. The exhibit continues through, during regular library hours, Monday –Thursday, 9 – 9 p.m., Friday & Saturday, 9 – 5 p.m.

Approximately 100,000 undocumented immigrants under the age of 18 are stopped at the border each year. El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, account for about 85% of the youth detained. Texas hosts 58% of these youth, far more than any other state. Most of the youth taken into custody were attempting to join relatives already living in the U.S. The vast majority will be deported to their home countries, where they face deeply entrenched poverty and limited employment opportunities.

“I learned to develop skills I didn’t know I possessed,” said Carlos (not his real name), a program participant.

Through photography, Fotofronteras empowers participating youth to document their life stories, expand their personal horizons, and enlarge their vision of what is possible for them to accomplish in their lives.

The Healing Arts Project is partially funded by the Kronkosky Charitable Foundation, Alice Kleberg Reynolds Foundation, San Antonio Area Foundation and Valero Energy Corp.

Visit the official Healing Arts website here.

“The artists from Jump-Start Performance Co. have provided the abused and neglected children residing at St. PJ’s with incredible opportunities to discover hidden talents and learn more about themselves. The respectful and creative interactive process between the artists and the children has led to many healing experiences, as well as significant improvements in self-esteem.”
- Susan Bomalaski, former Executive Director, St. Peter’s/St. Joseph’s Children’s Home

The Healing Arts project is a unique collaboration between ten community human service agencies and arts organizations that serve abused, neglected, or abandoned children. The program places trained artists and mentors in residential and community centers. The arts help traumatized children discover their creative talents and overcome expressive disorders resulting from abuse. The program began as a pilot project in 2000. As a result of its initial success, the Healing Arts program received major funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Currently, Jump-Start provides services at the Westside and Eastside Boys and Girls Clubs, Seton Home, Baptist Children’s Home and Santa Rosa Hospital.

Healing Arts projects include On The Loose, a rap CD with songs written and performed by children ages 11 to 15, puppet books featuring felt puppets in watercolor environments, an ongoing photography club where children learn basic principles of photography, and a Girls Club with arts activities that build self-esteem and address issues of concern to pre-adolescent girls.

Self-Revolution
Unit B gallery
September 18 – November 7, 2009

“Self-Revolution brings together the work of black artists both academic and self-taught whose interest lie in questioning the roles of identity, culture and perception through the use of their bodies and experimentation. These artists stray outside the conventional thinking of modernism, performance and visual expression from both western contemporary and contemporary black esthetics. Whereas history and experience play strong roles in all the artist’s work, the way they are conveyed can at times be perceived as shocking due to their use and restructuring of the medium they choose to express their ideas. Presentation and attention to aspects of African and African American ritual are applied unapologetically by each artist to help better understand the conceptual nature of operating in and outside of colonial structures while addressing the broad and complex culture of those of African decent.”

San Antonio Flash Mob Organization BABY SWAP

Hosted by:

Gabriel Anthony Garza

When:

Saturday, October 03, 2009 1:00 PM – 2:20 PM CDT (End Time Estimated)

Description

San Antonio Flash Mob Organization will be Hosting its first Event on Saturday, Oct. 3rd, 2009. We are calling it BABY SWAP -

Show up at the Briefing Point, Maverick Park on Broadway, at 1pm. We will have a short discussion of the process and will depart from the Briefing Point at 1:15pm.

You will be given one hour to arrive at the Event Area (hint: it’s somewhere downtown)

At 2:15 we will Began swapping Baby Dolls in a public place. the event will only last a few minutes. afterwards you will disperse as if nothing happened. The event will be filmed. We will be meeting back up at Sam’s Burger Joint after the event.

We advise you to buy a CHEAP baby doll from a discount store (Because you might not get the same one back)

We’re trying to maintain the loose illusion that the baby dolls are real babies, so if you can borrow or otherwise attain a stroller, by all means bring it. If not, that’s okay, too. Try to make the Baby Doll as believable as possible. And dress inconspicuously, as if you were a normal, average parent.

If you are not familiar with a Flash Mob, check out Improv Everywhere on YouTube.

PLEASE DO NOT BRING A REAL BABY TO THE EVENT!
(I can Not stress this enough.)

Gordon - In & Outlaws

6:39 am, September 5, 2009.

The In and Outlaws CD release party, Casbeers at The Church, San Antonio, TX.

“…a large vacant area.”

Not at all.

My favorite cow music this side of Jon Wayne.

Brad, the drummer, has a serious demeanor to say the least. Not that different than the visage of Charlie Manson, who appeared on TV a few hours earlier in the bar downstairs where I was hanging out with the chilled out blues of Los Mescaleros and intermittently watching the Cowboys play the Vikings in the last pre-season game of the year. It’s a contest in which a few players who may still have the chance of gaining a roster spot are said to be “on the bubble.” Choice quote, from one of the play by play guys, in reference to Patrick Watkins, who’s putting out an extraordinary performance: “He’s like Glinda The Good Witch. That’s how far inside the bubble he is.” Odie, of the Mescaleros, sitting down behind his stand up bass, has a tambourine strapped head side down to his boot. This makes me smile. I chill a little further in.

Later on, I join the standing room only congregation gathered for The In and Outlaws. The shadow of Lloyd’s bass head on a fluted column, which stands behind him, truncated, too white, supporting nothing. Burton, on pedal steel, wearing an Eleven Hundred Springs gimme cap with a high foam front. Ragged mic hole in Brad’s kick drum. Long red rag hanging from Matthew’s left pocket, has a Fifties Full Service look. Frayed hems of Gordon’s jeans splay around his too flat used car salesman shoes. These are the details that keep me alive between songs.

Downstairs, fetching beers, I hear Mike say, “In Utah they think 88 degrees is hot.” Justin says, “In Berlin they think 87 is.”

Brad - the cereal killer

Guys, thanks for playing the unicorn number for the encore. Matthew, I love the middle school lead you do on this song. Brad, rumor has it you don’t care too much for playing it, but I like it. You write most of the material — please come up with one titled Guernsey Girl. I know Gordon can sing it.

Weschler lecture at Chinati

Posted by thomas-cummins on 01 Sep 2009 | Tagged as: upcoming events

Tue, Sep 8
7:30 pm to 9:30 pm

Lawrence Weschler
On Tuesday, September 8 at 7:30 PM, the Chinati Foundation will host a free lecture by writer Lawrence Weschler at the Crowley Theatre. Admission is free and everyone is invited to attend.

Lawrence Weschler is the author of two books recently published by the University of California Press, both biographical studies of contemporary artists: Seeing is Forgetting the Name of the Thing One Sees: Thirty Years of Conversations with Robert Irwin (an expanded reissue of his 1982 classic) and True to Life: Twenty-Five Years of Conversations with David Hockney.

Weschler’s 1982 edition of Seeing is Forgetting the Name of the Thing One Sees tracked the evolution of Robert Irwin’s approach to art-making as the artist sought, in the 1960s and ’70s, to pare his work down to the simplest and purest elements of perception. The book is now widely regarded as one of the best ever written about an artist. Following its publication, Weschler was contacted by David Hockney, who had read the book and wanted to discuss it with the author. While Hockney was at pains to dispute almost every one of Irwin’s beliefs about art and perception as reported in Seeing is Forgetting, he was nevertheless sufficiently impressed by the book to engage Weschler to write about his own current work with photography.

Weschler has continued to write extensively about Irwin and Hockney over the years, with the two artists, who have never met face to face, conducting a sort of running argument via the author. As Weschler described it in the November/December 2008 issue of The Believer: “[F]or some twenty-five years now, whenever I have written about one or the other of these two giants of contemporary art (arguably the two most significant artists to come out of the late-twentieth-century California art milieu), the other one has called effectively to tell me, “Wrong, wrong, wrong.” The two have never met or conversed in person (straddling that Southern California scene like Schoenberg and Stravinsky before them, each seemingly oblivious to the other’s existence though in fact deeply seized by the work); instead they have been carrying on this quite vivid argument for over two decades, through me, as it were.”

Weschler’s talk at the Crowley Theatre will describe what it has been like, these past twenty-five years, to mediate the ongoing “debate” between Irwin and Hockney.

Lawrence Weschler was a staff writer at The New Yorker from 1981 to 2002. He is the author of many books, including Mr. Wilson’s Cabinet of Wonder (1995), which was shortlisted for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award. Everything that Rises: A Book of Convergences (2006) won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Criticism. Weschler has been the director of the New York Institute for the Humanities at New York University since 2001.

San Antonio, Texas – August 12, 2009 G2 Art Sight is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of photography by Rodolfo Choperena, September 11th – October 3, 2009. The exhibition, U N E X P E C T E D, showcases Choperena’s psychedelic and lyrical photographs which opens at the gallery with a public reception during the Fourth Tobin Hill Art Alliance “Art on the Hill” art walk, on Friday – September 11th from 6pm – 10pm. The artist will be in attendance.
In his inaugural exhibition, Rodolfo Choperena bends and manipulates light by utilizing various photography techniques. The resulting images contain striations that move in varying intervals and rhythms, challenging one’s perception of the concept of reality through exploring positive and negative space.
While manipulating the camera’s movement in relation to a specified light source, in addition to changing exposure and aperture settings, the body of work pushes the boundaries of perception to create organic, free forms in a lyrical fashion.
These large scale photographs are inspired by nature and the artists’ immediate surrounding environment. The representative vantage point hosts many personal objects which make each photograph a direct reflection of Choperena’s daily life.
For more information on the exhibition or to arrange an interview with the artist, please contact the artist directly.
