Go check out the road to the parking lots at the ol’ San Antonio International Airport. San Antonio local, Gary Sweeney has interjected some good humor into a portion of the drive. I managed to catch him there, hard hat and all..
These are just a few of the signs he placed in the drive space, keep an eye out the next time you go for a spin around the SA Airport to catch the rest.

Let’s get you caught up on all this Electronic Election Voter Fraud business. If you’re having voting problems, here’s something to alleviate your constitution.{Highly recommend watching that with the sound OFF}
The above image is evidence of our friend Mantecatron’s adventure across Mexico, documenting subversive art that looks vaguely familiar to a gigantic woven receipt at the Museo Alameda’s Escultura Social exhibition. If you’re into the Mad Men series, you might appreciate this opinion piece. And does any mortgage-foreclosing, American citizen really have time to sift through the 1,000 art pieces to see before you die? Seems Brobdingnagian at best.
In other news, I’d like to take a reader’s poll regarding upcoming interviews. What would you rather read about? Interviews with curators/artists/collectors/musicians/or others? Just post a comment. I’ll leave you with some more images from Beto…

Looks like Emvergeoning has been collecting dust! Eek! Thought I could at least post a new image and some linkies. Who is afraid of Sarah Palin? Everybody’s talkin about golden parachutes but what about The Golddiggers? What will you be for Halloween? Do you see the vitality in a line? Don’t forget to vote early, or we will kill you oh so softly with this .

Why does this sweet paper project by Margaret Meehan seem to sum up the state of the economy in America? All apologies, for we’ve been slacking over here at Emvergeoning headquarters, but, hey, we’ll get back atcha…

In between running around shooting photos of record stores and weird museums today, I managed to make it by the Alamo and catch Jacob Goudreault (fresh in town from Chicago, IL) doing a performance / painting give-away in front of our favorite old mission.

Here’s a Flickr preview of the Escultura Social show opening at Museo Alameda tomorrow (the photos are from the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, where the exhibit originated). For those keeping tabs on San Anto art connections, Escultura Social includes Julieta Aranda, who recently showed at Sala Diaz, and Stefan Brüggemann, who recently showed at TPS (aka Triange Project Space). Should be a good one.

While my friend James spent some time in San Cristobal de las Casas last year, he took the time to document most instances of stencil graffiti that he came across. He has recently organized and uploaded it to this . Its worth a look. Awhile back, Michelle had highlighted a few of his images from his trip, but he had yet to post the entirety of what he had seen, hence the redundancy. Michelle also made the connection to some of the imagery we see on the streets of San Antonio from our local stencil hero “Scotch!“.

Mutual of Omaha has “Visions of Victory” with a sports themed photo exhibition opening this weekend at the San Antonio Museum of Art. [The press photo a week ago was of a dirty Joe Namath on the football field, thus the Youtube reference...FYI] What are the greatest moments in sports history and who cares? Anybody want to take bets on the chances that the beloved San Antonio Spurs are anywhere in the mix? Only recommended on Free Tuesdays at SAMA from 4pm until 9pm.

Anne Wallace’s sidewalk stamping project, originally commissioned to her in 1999, is finally able to come to a close with the completion of Florida Streets new sidewalks all the way from 281 to S. St. Marys (San Antonio, Texas). The work includes a range of quotes from neighborhood people about their memories of the area, as well as images of traditional crops grown in the area, which was once the farmland for the Alamo. The corn, beans, frogs, hands, snakes, and text panels are totally worth a bike ride down Florida next time you are down this way.

public art? aqualung? pigeon coop? design by committee? I’m trying to get a good angle on it, but nobody seems to know ANYTHING about these. Pictured below, I’ve spent the last 2 months asking people “in the know,” if they know of, or have seen these objects, to no avail. Do you know anything about these giant acrylic hollow boxes, sheathed in metal and bathroom tile on the fore-front of our walk through downtown to the Alamodome? I’m not sure of the exact install date, but I have seen them unchanged in their current condition since the 2 weeks preceding the Final Four basketball games that gripped downtown San Antonio for a week. Possibly its unfinished? ..or maybe I just don’t get it.

One of my favorite pieces of long-standing illegal graffiti in San Antonio, totally anonymous aside from the image itself, this large painting of a Native American Indian in feather headdress on the Sunshine Laundry building on South Flores has been catching my eye for some time. After asking around, I heard several stories of people who have purportedly met this person, painting the same Indian in other places, (bar bathrooms?) No info as to the artist identity (or given “street” name) has been found. This image is in plain sight of rush hour traffic going by Flores St. on I-35 in San Antonio (near San Pedro exit).

Invites have been circulating recently for a reception to mark the opening of the new Linda Pace Foundation offices (adjacent to Pace’s Camp Street residence) that have been quietly renovated over the last year or so. I noticed on my bike ride to the gallery last week that the big blank wall facing S. Flores had been installed with a new text piece. After some research, I’m concluding it is one of the new pieces of the Pace collection, mentioned in the reception invite as a Daniel Joseph Martinez. The invite mentions two new acquisitions for the Foundation, no info as to the other has yet surfaced.

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art spent the last three years curating a massive show called Phantom Sightings: Art after the Chicano Movement. The catalog is a beautiful, hard cover book that features primarily LA based artists with a couple of San Antonio troublemakers in the mix: Alejandro Diaz and . The show will travel to Mexico City, Berlin, Paris and New York (Rita Gonzalez, is this accurate?). Alejandro should be quite joyful these days, having recently been awarded the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation award in the amount of $25,000. That’s a lot of tacos.
Other award winners included former Artpace resident, Wangechi Mutu and Houstinite Robert Pruitt. Congratulations!

..a few things I experienced this weekend in San Antonio.
Seeing the EPA, back on site at the old Big Tex Grain Silos, testing again? (last update from SA Current) Riding my bike by today it seemed like they were set up for the night, this would make the second time they have spent time gathering samples here. When I spoke with the manager onsite last time he told me it was a waiting game, if the results came back conclusive they would be back for more tests..It was turned into an EPA Superfund site sometime last year(oops, maybe longer).
(disclosure : I shot this photo weeks ago for the Current, when the EPA were first onsite.. I had to be driven onto the property in a protected vehicle..It was not the first time I had to question the four years I spent out here working on and inside of FL!GHT Gallery, which was once housed in the now fenced off Silo # 18)
One more of the mayors new projects came online last night, the reopening/renovation of Main Plaza (in front of San Fernando Cathedral) was celebrated with a fountain lighting and an LED piece with the San Antonio Symphony and Bill FitzGibbons collaborating..
Also opening with much fanfare was Mignon Harkraders “Swellegant,” this last Second Saturday at FL!GHT. We’re all pretty proud of the improvements in our dry goods room around here also (2nd image). Mignon’s show will be up through the end of the month.

Everything got screwed up. Emvergeoning’s calendar editor forgot to post Ms. Southtown, San Antonio’s artsiest drag beauty pageant, to our events listing; last night, when Ms. Southtown was happening, our trusty photographer was out working for The Man; and our amateur backup paparazzo filled up the camera memory right before the trophy was handed to the winner. I guess that’s why we don’t get the big bucks, and why I’m typing this from a cardboard box in an alleyway off Houston St. But here it is: Ms. Southtown in photos.
